What is your evaluation criteria when reading a book? Content, form? What makes a "good" prose? Do rhetorical figures hold significant value or nah?

Often the best books i've ever heard had a mediocre, simple or bad premise. So i don't really trust it that much.

Well yeah but when YOU judge a book how do you do so

I judge books based on how much personal enjoyment I get then rationalize my way toward a decent opinion. Yes pleb

I should like it. That's a rather esoteric value that comes together in stuff like the subject matter, the writing style, etc. etc.
I judge a book by being me. I mean, when I want to read about Roman history, I don't really care about the plot. When I want to read philosophical science fiction, I don't want to have my intelligence insulted with simplistic nonsense.
It all really depends on what you are looking for in the first place. A book is a good read when it conforms to your expectations, and is consistent in doing so.
