Is Herodotus required for the Greeks?

yes

I'm not really interested in history and I'm getting confused about all these fucking cities and regions.
Herodotus is awesome, it's just so much fun. Easily the lightest reading of the Greeks.

then don't read him. Read whatever the fuck you want the "start with the greeks" meme is just for psueds. If you aren't enjoying what you are reading, then you shouldn't be reading it. Anyone who attempts to read an author just because they think it makes them more of an intellectual is a faggot. If you give something a shot and don't like it, find a book you do like.

this plus you can always come back to it later if you want. you dont have to read everything right away
>>9622302
How is it light reading? It feels like reading Wikipedia

>confused about all these fucking cities and regions
use a map

??? It sounds like you barely just started The Histories... Read it for all the great stories, man. They're about to come. Like when Darius wanted to win the election so he rigged it by rubbing his hand on a mare's pussy and placing his under his horse's nose to get the horse excited, thus deeming him the chosen one. Or before that when he and the boys storm the castle. Or the story of Artemisia crashing into her own ship just to get away from the fray. Or the Spartan defense in the pass, or Xerxes getting advice about his dreams, or that dude who built a tomb for the king or Cyrus and his glory and holy fuck I need to re-read this because there's so much more but that's all I remember off the dome.
Fuck i need to re-read Herodotus
I have a Greek history book by Cyril Robinson and the Histories by Herodotus.
Would reading the history book first help me to know about things and enjoy Herodotus, ruin Herodotus, or would it make no difference?
I have a very little knowledge of Greek History.
best translation?

Yes. Not entirely reliable historically (as are most of the greek and roman authors) but pleasant to read.
