What is your opinion of the books that are required reading in American high schools?
If you were in charge of the curriculum, what books would you require high school students read and why?

Depends on the country, i believe every country should study it's essentials.
For America, i'd keep Hemmingway, Melville, Fitzgerald as it is. Probably add The Crying Lot of 49.
I don't know about American high schools, but in my country we got lists of ~50 books from which we could choose any five that looked interesting. I think that's a good way of doing it. Everyone can find something that looks interesting to them, but nobody ends up reading just trash since the lists are compiled by educators who know their stuff. The only book I've had to read was the first one written in my native language, and that was in secondary school.
HS shouldn't even exist at all, but if I had to do the nasty job, I'd obligate the kids to read 1984 and the catcher in the rye. Just those two.
