Why do these style of books get no respect? They are some of the finest literary works Ive ever read.
People judge books by their covers.
Though to be honest Vance has always been an underrated author. G.W. stole his limelight.

I've only read the Dying Earth short stories, surely once you've read these then you've read them all as far as Jack Vance is concerned right? All the descriptions on flowers, gardens, the sky, architecture, just seem like they repeat themselves across all of his works.
I'm probably completely wrong though.

Sell me on them, Anon.

Vance has some variety. His Emphyrio is in another style - less baroque, more nostalgic, a different kind of protagonist. It's a good coming-of-age dystopia/rebellion story.

Vance predates Wolfe by like 40 years you ding dong
Lyonesse is GOAT, definitely better than 99% of the fantasy books be released today.
I don't know if this is a Vance-only thread or not but Michael Moorcock has good stuff too.

Vance gets lots of respect in the sff community.
One of my favourite authors definetly.

you are completely wrong. the Lyonesse Trilogy is darker than the Dying Earth short stories, and the tales of Cugel are much funnier.

when i read Moorcock's "Knight of the Swords", i sometimes detect faint traces of Jack Vance's style. i could be mistaken.

Cugel is part of the Dying Earth
