Does /lit/ think this narrative pattern is a worthwhile template for creating a short story or novel?

OP was using it in the prescriptive sense, which makes for bad writing
I'm more interested if there are good stories where the protagonist has fallen from that journey, and a side character picks it up.

Psycho or L'avventura come to mind regarding the main character being disposed and another replacing them. Not literature though.
