Is /lit/ genuinely anti DFW now?
>>
>>9596213
I think lit is actually too stupid for DFW now. Notice how out of all the legitimate criticisms you can make of DFW, lit will 9/10 times resort to complaining about his pretentiousness, or how he is being insincere by adding superfluous references that don't relate to his life in any genuine way. And note how they use insincere in order to protest his advocation for sincerity, not realizing that their use of insincere isn't the opposite of his sincerity, which is just to put it briefly the understanding that nowadays even if there aren't privileged definitions of value or truth it doesn't preclude and shouldn't be used as a bridge to not cultivate virtues corresponding to honesty, truthfulness, etc. His whole deal is that irony was co-opted by mass entertainment and was adopted by the culture to disavow real issues and real problems when it was originally used to rebel against dogmatism and propaganda.
>>

>>
>>9596261
yes, because i enjoy discussing literature
>>
>>9596281
listen here jack I didn't say anything about his ideas or opinion. I just said he seems lame. Not like you with your cutting edge facebook memeolgy and your dollar story sarcasm you sound like someone whose life is governed by ironic self awareness and societal cliche. You're like the caged bird who sings about how he has come to love his cage. And if you ask me there is something terribly sad and banal about that.
>>
>>9596261
more fun than hanging out with someone who's insecure and just throws out the cheapest insults they can muster
>>
Ya know? Personally I stay away from these threads because though I've been a reader my entire life, I've read little DFW-- only the essays in Consider..
But there he seems like an amiable, competent writer. I suppose I should bight the bullet and read his fiction.
>>
i've never read anything by dfw but it's been quite a journey seeing lit going (even more) ape shit because of this guy today

dude are you like a psych major or something?
>>

Fuck you and your irony, say something real at least. This is exactly what he's talking about for shits sake, you have no real criticism other than regurgitating phrases from the system you live in (Facebook, memeology, ironic self awareness, double dfw quote (one which is invented by lit))

why do you hate irony so much bro?
>>
I think /lit/ has outgrown DFW. That, or it may just be that most of our newer posters were too young to read Infinite Jest when it first came out, and so it wasn't a formative experience in their lives.

Infinite Jest really seems to be the Harry Potter of a lot of /lit/izens. I haven't read it, but I get the sense that it had a profound impact on a lot of the people here that did.

Notice how DFW never tries to broach any of these real issues and real problems.

It's always some lame "people need to THINK more about the WORLD AROUND THEM and BE MORE SINCERE and maybe we'd GET SOMEWHERE" Tony Robbins bullshit that can't actually be discussed.
>>
>>9596338
I just dislike people who choose to use sarcasm in place of thinking, its made the entire world shit as far as I'm concerned. Just like how any major issue today is a race to make the most sardonic comment just to get people to think you're funny and likable. Trying to get people to like you by acting a certain way is fraudulent (sound familiar?), that's why it's hilarious that that guys (maybe you?) first response was about how hanging out with me must be terrible because im lame and should feel bad about it
>>
>>9596326
I'm not him but the problem I have with Wallace and his fanboys is this regressive wish that we can go back to the good old days when people were sincere. it kind of says more about them and their own own discomfort with themselves, something Wallace struggled with that eventually ended up driving him to suicide.
>>9596252
I don't think Wallace understands irony or modern times. He seemed overwhelmed by a lot of things and I think he built a strawman which he called irony to attribute all his dissatisfaction with the world. white collar ennui, inability to tackle real issues whatever.
>His whole deal is that irony was co-opted by mass entertainment and was adopted by the culture to disavow real issues and real problems when it was originally used to rebel against dogmatism and propaganda.
it's not so simple or black and white. Irony does create problems for people when there is too much or too little of it but it is still used in protest. it's also used in advertising and all the things he complains about but that's just how things go.
>>
>>9596353
Except it seems like you've never read him at all and have only watched the water speech, a speech intended for a wide and varied audience who may or may not want to get into rigorous philosophical debates while cooking in the sun after watching two hundred people walk across a stage
>>
>>9596389
why don't you bring up examples of how he's wrong and quote some DFW going into depth about these problems if you've read him so much

why not prove him wrong instead of just assuming he hasn't read DFW because he doesn't like him as much as you?

>>
>>9596665
I agree, what do you like best? I think pale king would've been his best but oblivion actually is with a few from brief interviews. IJ is still a great book but is too bloated even for the excessive novel genre it comes from, it makes me wonder if people that imaginative are actually better when given constraints. I'm still thankful for the experience of reading it though even if as I learn more literature I understand its flaws, naivete, and arrogance because it really showed me what the form is capable of.
>>
>>9596213
I like him as a person, and as a writer I think he's alright, better than most contemporary garbage, but not a literary giant by any stretch.
>>
>>9596726
I have a pretty similar opinion actually. I believe that The Pale King has his best writing by far, but I can't really call it his best work since it's nowhere near complete. In terms of completed work I think various essays from Consider The Lobster and some of the short stories in Oblivion are his best

Ever since reddit infiltrated, there's been a noticeable increase of people using terms like "pretentious" and "elitist" because (check for yourself) this is the go-to response to anything reddit can't understand. The recent backlash on difficult novels (Pynchon, Gaddis, Wallace, Barth, Joyce, etc.) is not a coincidence, there are more brainlets hanging out around here recently, go into any thread about Stephen King if you want proof. Just call them out, watch how they repeat the previously stated terms without ever coming up with a legitimate criticism, and it will become clear just how little the people here actually read.

>Is /lit/ genuinely anti DFW now?

We had a few years of worshiping DFW as a postmodern Messiah. The majority of /lit/ really has no understanding of postmodernism, but now that Jordan Peterson has come along and essentially said postmodernists are synonymous with leftist SJWs, /lit/ has had no choice but to abandon poor old Dave.
>>
>>9600185
Applying Peterson's criticism to the literary movement in any way is ridiculous and reductive.
>>
Part of the disdain for him stems from Infinite Jest's failure to live up to its former reputation here, once actually read - the novel strains under the weight of its own ambition, though if it misses the mark one must be charitable because it was a difficult shot to take, and one that no one before had attempted, truly. Of course, the same criticism cannot be levied on, nor the same charity required from, the rest of his corpus; especially his later short stories, which at their best are sublime and at their worst still engaging with typical Wallaceian flair. But of these /lit/ remains paradoxically and woefully unread.

Another possibility to consider is DFW's cultural synonymity with overeducated, overintellectual, perhaps posturing, mainly white, college-aged males, and that this may have caused those who have a bone to pick with that group, and those on whom they impress, to reject DFW as a symbol of American white bourgeois masculinity; of course /lit/, ever-modish, and with sizable reddit import, would be quick to seize upon such a trend - but I refrain from further judgment.
>>
>>9600248
Oh fuck off
>>
>>9600217
>Applying Peterson's criticism to the literary movement in any way is ridiculous and reductive.

Yet it is completely accurate. From 2012-2015, DFW was /lit/s posterboy for postmodernism. They worshiped DFW and worshiped postmodernism, usually with multiple daily threads along the lines of, "What is postmodernism?" DFW was heralded as the postmodern king. Just have a scroll through the archives from around that time. Both DFW and postmodernism held the same pedestal, and /lit/ would collective kneel before them in wide-eyed worship.

Ever since Peterson became /lit/s new messiah, postmodernism, and anything associated with postmodernism, has become the object of despise and ridicule. Unfortunately, somewhere on the verges of /lit/s Freudian Id is old notion that DFW is this incredible postmodern wizard, and the new notion that postmodernism is something tooo do with leftist SJW otherkin. /lit/s ego is unable to reconcile these two positions.

Also give this 10min segment a watch: Jordan Peterson - The Importance of Battling Postmodernism

I took a creative nonfiction course with David Wallace at Ponoma back in '94. We weren't allowed to show anyone our essays outside of the class for some reason. He seemed naturally intelligent, didnt need to look at any notes or textbooks or prepare for any lectures, he just knew his stuff and was super casual.

I saw him talking to a girl on campus one day. He uncharacteristically wore a Fila sweatsuit, the kind that looks like it's made from the same material as parachutes, and trainer sneakers with a matching bandana. That was his pussy hunt outfit apparently. Several times a week, same outfit, I'd see him hitting on women in it. I once saw him wearing it while carrying an identical outfit from the dry cleaners, he had like 4 sets of same Fila sweatsuit.

I asked him about it in class and he said we aren't allowed to discuss anything unrelated to class while inside class, the same way we can't show anyone outside of cass our essays. A student called out "but Dostoevsky isn't in this class and last week you talked about replicating his black tea obsession to test its affects on your own writing". Wallace stared blankly at the student with dead eyes for 30 seconds in dead silence then said "you just got knocked down a full letter grade. Any other smart asses? Didn't think so." and pushed up his glasses with his index finger.

I remember telling myself this guy will either be super successful or kill himself.

I would have never heard of IJ if it wasn't for /lit/ and I somehow stuck through it all. I could care less whether or not people like it or dislike it, reading this book reversed years of verbal atrophy due to chronic academia. It's also refreshing to see some of his stylistic choices. I got in trouble as a kid for using baroque as an adjective, and for using apostrophes immediately after plurals, and other little things, but DFW does it all, which I feel is supreme vindication. My only wonder is, how a literary talent like this could have survived the American educational system without being crushed into cubiform.
>>
>>9601807
I know this is copypasta but someone should really fix the date.

Wallace taught at Pomona from 2004 until his suicide in 2008.

Either fix it to be Illinois State University in 1994 or Pomona in 2004-2008.

On a side note, I studied at Pomona College 2002-2006 and I saw him a few times around campus. I never took a class with him, but I really wish I had.

if DFW were alive today my prediction is he would be writing about the alt-right as a corrupted new-sincerity based off a postmodernist world view where people see the truth in sincerity but cannot bring themselves to actually embrace it and so stoke a fire of sincerity through the ironic and simulated distance that internet neo-nazism allows them. basically, those in need of new sincerity are too nihilistic for it, but maintain a communal LARPed daydream of it in the alt right.

I will never not laugh at the greatly deserved ridicule of this hack fraud. Why bother reading someone who couldn't even live with himself?

The only sincere moment in the life of David Foster Wallace was when he kicked away the chair. The rest of his life was a lie, the new sincerity was a joke whose punchline was the creaking of a leather belt around the rafter.

His literary career was a menagerie of self help lies told to keep his depression at bay - the audience pussy and drugs were the ghosts at that feast of hypocrisy.

The depression was warranted because behind all the gimmicks and the self awareness and the bandannas was no discernible talent.

I don't really see what's so bad about him and Infinite Jest is a very fun read. Maybe it's academics or self proclaimed "patricians" (AKA pseudo) who don't like him. It's art, there's no right answer, and if it doesn't speak to you it doesn't speak to you.
