After the first two novels it becomes the literary equivalent of experimental jazz. Too chaotic. But Voyage and Mort à Crédit are easily the best French novels of the 20th century. His antijoo trilogy of essays is also pretty dank. There's an English translation of the first one, don't know about the other two.

90% of people who praise Celine on this website are French. Also, you can easily identify them because they're the only ones who write it with the accent (Céline). French people really consider him like a hero or some kind of genius just because his writing style is pretty unique in their literary tradition. But then they get madly butthurt when you say people like Miller or Burroughs are way better than Celine. Personally, I've read the Journey and I thought it was absolute trash. I felt sad, because from the descriptions I expected it to be very different (better). In the end he was just a stressed-out doctor full of shit and resentment towards everything. You don't draw conclusions from that book, you don't take or learn anything. Not even a writing style to be honest, since that kind of harsh, super pessimistic and pornographic prose is completely outdated and inadequate nowadays.

There's some pretty funny stories about Junger in Paris during WWII (he had some figurehead position for the Nazis iirc, even though he wasn't a big fan of them and was friends with those who plotted to kill Hitler) about how freaked out he was by Celine, his antisemitism and his overall bleak view of life.

That's an interesting description. I read Castle to Castle recently and it's like he read criticisms of his earlier books lacking plot and decided to piss people off even more. The meat of the book just felt like a loosely strung together series of vignettes. Of course the first 100 pages or so aren't even that structured and essentially act as a rant against everyone from his publishers to the people that got him locked up. I think if you get enjoyment from the "Célinean perspective" though, it won't matter how disjointed his actual structure is. Even in English, his language feels very explosive and the humor doesn't appear to be lost in translation. Céline could narrate any event in history and I'd probably read it, but it's especially interesting to read his take on the downfall of the Vichy regime.

Basically incorrect: comparing apples and oranges, really, plus both Miller and Burroughs were highly influenced by French lit anyways, esp. Miller. As a stylist, Celine is way above them in his misuse of language; Burroughs just veers towards deliberate and mechanical illegibility while Miller coasts along with his cod-European schlock and general bad faith. (I quite like them both, and read Miller again recently so hardly butthurt or sour grapes).

To reduce Celine to the Journey is a mistake, I feel, a broader view of his oeuvre is necessary, and for that presumably some French is necessary too. I don't know what his works are like in English, but here's one for /lit/ to enjoy:

Obviously talented but I don't like him. His prose is too vulgar for my liking, I'm not saying it's bad mind you because he is really good at it. I just don't enjoy reading about fat droopy cunts and gay blowjobs, too unsettling. The man hates humanity (and yids) with a burning passion and it shows too.
I'd much rather read Alphonse Boudard, another writer who uses french argot, it's nicer desu even if he obviously is not as talentuous as Celine
