Is Gene Wolf genuinely considered one of literature's greats? What's so appealing about his work?
I'm not much of a genre fiction guy myself but I'm curious as to why he's so well respected here, plus if there's any worthwhile recommendations I should check out, I'd be very willing to give them a go.

No, he's not terribly appreciated in wider circles, but has a very solid reputation and interesting works were written about his novels. You should probably check out Fifth Head of Cerberus to see if you like him, it's 3 70 page novellas where a lot of what he does is showcased- first person narration that twists the events according to the narrator's perspective, rich, allusive prose, symbolism and certain themes on what's human (this particular work is about colonialism) and general Catholic stuff, which is prominent in his major works.
