Wrote 6 books, and as I recall, only one of the characters in them fits that description. He's in a terrible marriage, wife seemingly lost all self-respect as well as respect for him when they found themselves unable to conceive a child, he's checked himself out at a doctor and found himself to not be the problem. He's regularly abused, both verbally and physically by her, and spends his nights on the sofa willingly. What would divorce provide? It would provide HER with half his possessions, probably including the house, and possibly alimony on top of it. Suicide is an option...
