We were talking about this in the Torah/Pentateuch thread. If you are serious scholar, you read ancient Hebrew/Greek as well as some of the more obscure forgotten languages. But if you a literary scholar, it sounds like the annotated Oxford Bible is a good place to start. KJV is always pretty good too, considering is relatively accurates and it tries to preserve some the Bible's poetry and melodic patterns

If I want to read the bible to better understand references in other works, should I read the KJV bible or go with a more literal one like the NRSV?

For the Hebrew Bible, New Oxford Annotated is great. KJV really preserves the syntax and gives a good impression of the tone and such
