American here, no, especially at a bullshit state school like NYU--it just means that OP took some entry level classes in French or Spanish, and then spent 4 years scrutinizing other people's translations (most likely from a phenomenological perspective, not an analytical/linguistic one), without ever commanding the language well enough to complete her own translation--of a work that's already been translated five hundred times.

And that's all her undergraduate degree means.
