It seems Queen Laurie Penny has written another three books since she was last here. One in particular, Everything Belongs to the Future, has really grabbed my attention. What's the general consensus of it here? it seems to be a departure from her usual angry hipster position.

Really? Not meant as an insult, but are you fairly new? /lit/ was obsessed with her. About fifty threads a day obsessed for a year, split between those who wanted to lynch her and those writing "Penny porn" essays. it reached a point where Laurie threads became a bannable offense. Then she found out /lit/ was obsessed with her and came here herself. And that's when all hell broke lose

to not just meme about her, I'd say she is the nostalgic left liberal that the UK has absolutely no need of going forward, and she slots in a weird position between low level journalist but embedding main stream social theorists ideas in her work. I really don't think doing both is worthwhile.

what is her problem?

A girl's gotta make a living.
We all know in 20 years she'll be writing for the Mail (the Guardian won't exist), complaining that her husband doesn't do chores, and waxing nostalgic about how kids today aren't radical like she used to be.

Anyone got that video wherein someone says that the CIA started the third-wave feminist movement in order to detract would be revolutionaries towards something benign and meaningless and thus ignoring bigger issues like net neutrality and whatnot; Penny becomes either enraged or just stupified.

The scariest, most enduring dystopias walk a fine line between parable and prediction. Penny erases that line. In this made-up story, the rich speciate from the poor; in our real world, working class lifespans are declining as the one percent live ever longer lives at ever-greater removes from the rest of us. This is no mere literary device. This is a pitiless allegory, calculated to enrage and terrify its readers.

The Guardian is spunking money like a drunk at Vegas. Their policy of no paywall is killing it, hence the tin-rattling after every article.
It doesn't have the readership of the Times or Speccie, where people have the pockets, and the journalism isn't good enough. Nobody is paying to read Polly Toynbee.

The 'Guardian Masterclasses' are what make me laugh. Might as well have George Monbiot with a tin bowl and puppy eyes: 'George doesn't have a blanket tonight. Just £5 from you could keep him warm.'
>>
>>9569024
I like that idea of no paywall, I feel that decent journalism doesn't need people to pay for articles in order to be a success, but rather have worthwhile articles.

Now they shot themselves in the foot when they went after Wikileaks (whom they held up years ago) accusing them of being Russian intelligence.

>Julie Burchill,
Times are changing and men and women are coming to terms with the nasty things that happen to their souls when beauty is sold to the highest bidder. When asked what he would have been if not a fantastically rich footballer, Peter Crouch answered, ‘A virgin.’ A book by Holly Madison, the American reality TV star and ex-‘chief girlfriend’ of Hugh Hefner, details exactly what a modern gold-digger can expect; habitually drugging oneself in order to be able to submit one’s 23-year-old body to the arthritic caresses of a 90-year-old, 9 p.m. curfews, bestiality porn to put one in the mood for love, and carpets reeking of urine from the Boss’s posse of dogs.

Madison writes of her shock at first witnessing the Hefner’s behaviour in a disco, when he gets up to boogie; ‘I was genuinely mortified for him…had no one told him how silly he looked?’ Of course not — and his Magic Mirror had probably told him that he was the greatest dancer, as well as lover.

No matter how men judge women’s looks, it must remain a mystery to them that the plainest woman can get sex any time she wants, while even decent-looking men are reduced to masturbating and/or paying for it. Maybe the Magic Mirror is more of a comfort blanket, after all?

Julie Burchill’s books include Ambition, I Knew I was Right and Unchosen: Memoirs of a Philo-Semite.

I like to use her as an example of the purity spiral consuming itself.

I always tell my leftist friends about how haughtily she took the uncomprehending Starkey to task for not being up on the latest jargon, more-pinko-than-thou, and then show them tweets where she's fucking bewildered by the fact that neo-neo-NEO-"leftists" are tearing her to shreds for not checking everyone's pronouns 13 times per second.

She's like "But.. But that's silly!" and they reply
>THE FACT THAT IT'S SILLY TO YOU SHOWS HOW MUCH OF A FOSSIL YOU ARE!
just like she did to Starkey.

Worthless champagne socialists, turning the entire left into a social club with status hierarchies, while the working class drifts to orgyporgy. Laurie Penny is walking counter-revolution.

I thought Patron was for people who desperately need money for a cause. They either need an extra $x a month for university fees, or $x a month to help fund their building orphanages in Uganda project.

Laurie's parents are loaded, she has regular column space in the Guardian, New Statesman and other publications, she has eight books bringing in cash, and she gets paid for regular talks and debates all over Europe and the US. WTF is she being funded for?

>I thought Patron was for people who desperately need money for a cause

From her Patron page. It seems she's lost her selling gimmick: The 'edge' she had when she was fresh out of uni and getting lots of attention for youth protest pieces. Now she's a bit older, she's tired of having to work and submit an occasional article to the magazines and tabloids she works for. She wants to quit writing articles and go travelling full-time to write about whatever she finds interesting instead of what the public and editors want. She probably could afford to do this on her book sales alone, but naturally she needs to hire a 'team' so she doesn't have to be distracted by any of life's realities like phone bills and booking guesthouses. Also, funding her travelling will annoy "alt-right hatebots, apparently.

>" I won't have to juggle two or three writing jobs while making the work I really care about. That means I can do a lot more writing..."

Sturgeon can call for whatever the fuck she wants, Parliament doesn't have to listen. And they can reasonably say that Scotland voted for Brexit too, in its capacity as a member of the UK, since after all a certain percentage of Scotland's population DID vote Leave.

A majority of Scotland voted remain you nonce

I try hard to like her, because we share a lot of views and her heart is in the right place, but she's just a bit... dumb...

For every great piece she writes there's 8-9 around it that are just rubbish.

Yeah, and a majority of England voted Leave. But England and Scotland are both part of the UK, and the UK as a whole voted Leave. Why is this so hard for some of you people to understand? It's not like California has grounds to leave the US just because they voted overwhelmingly for Clinton but Trump won the White House.
>>
>>9574815
You do realise that Scotland is a country in its own right and only stayed in the UK by a 5~% difference the last time they voted on it?
>>
>>9574815
State constitution of California allows secession by referenda. Why else do you think there's all this campaigning?
>>
>>9574832
But they DID stay in, so they own Brexit as assuredly as England does. That's the whole point of it being a United Kingdom, the four nations are in it together. Unless you'd like to tear up the Acts of Union.

>>
>>9574963
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. A second referendum is in the cards and appears to be entirely legal, you can't change that by arguing about it here.
>>
>>9574990
I've only seen Sturgeon talking about it, I've seen no inclination for it on the part of May or Corbyn. Sturgeon can't just will it into being when her party doesn't even have 75 seats in Parliament.
>>
>>9575367
It's got nothing to do with May or Corbyn, it's up to a vote in the Scottish parliament.

It means she has to suffer the agony of a day job writing articles for the Guardian when what she really wants to do is write a novel.Since she actually got her funding, I guess she is going to quit writing articles and focus on her next book.

I wish I could do the same. "Poor me. I have to work for a living and it's killing my creativity. Pls fund me so I can quit my job and focus on being creative."

>So why haven't you betas gone for this yet?

I remember when /lit/ went crawling to her twitter and begged her to come to /lit/ for a Q&A. It was the most awkward and pathetic thing I've ever seen. "Hello, Miss Penny. We are anonymous. We have an online literature club. We are really big fans Please can you come to our literature club for a Q&A."

>For every great piece she writes there's 8-9 around it that are just rubbish.

Id be exactly the same as a journalist. I'd mentally imagine myself as Hunter Thompson while my editor is picking my column titles. I'd have nothing of any real substance or value to write and would end up shitting out article after article of low-grade, borderline-clickbait drivel. Every ten or so, I'd be inspired and write one that I wasn't ashamed of showing my friends and family.

Penny wants more women of colour on that panel thats featured and tries to make a point that no one of such is on it.

Guy is explaining how the panel came to be, but then goes on explaining that identity politics were implemented by the CIA to devalue the left and focus on their own narcissism rather than any real political issues

>Everything belongs to the Future
Morality in Europe today is herd animal morality, anyone who fathoms the calamity that lies concealed in the absurd guilelessness and blind confidence of "modern ideas" and even more in the whole Christian-European morality - suffers from an anxiety that is past all comparisons... The overall degeneration of man down to what today appears to the socialist dolts and flatheads as their "man of the future" - as their ideal - this degeneration and diminution of man into the perfect herd animal (or as they prefer to put it; "free society"), this animalisation of man into the dwarf animal of equal rights and claims, is possible, but I hope by gods will it goes no further than words on paper.

If the Scottish parliament vote for it and the British explicitly deny the will of devolved government to decide on its own issues then it puts itself in a very dubious situation of unmitigated tension in the relationship of the union, essentially they know they have already lost the integrity of the union and it will sow further discontent
