That's it boys. He's given up. It's never coming out.
>>
>Aside from that, Martin has also been reported to be writing the script of five “Game of Thrones” spinoffs. According to rumours, the upcoming “Game of Thrones” Season 8 is going to be the last installment of the TV series but spinoff series are totally going to follow after its finale.
>>
Show's better anyway.
>>
>Martin reportedly became disappointed with David Benioff and Dan Weiss for featuring some spoilers for the upcoming sixth “A Song of Ice and Fire” novel
>Meanwhile, the "A Feast of Crows" writer has recently established the StageCoach Foundation, which aims to help budding filmmakers improve their skills in production. “The Winds of Winter” author is reportedly planning to ask the help of his good pals in Hollywood to help train the newbies.
Now that's what I call assblasted.

Moral of the story: Don't sell your soul!
>>
Can't wait for a more progressive writer to take over this series. This bigoted misogynist has spent enough time ruining a potentially great series with his fantasy.
>>
>>9564863

This. Martin sold his soul because of the popularity of faux geek culture and he wanted to be the next Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter but look at where it has gotten him? Martin should've remained a niche fantasy author until he at least had books 1-6 out before signing a deal with HBO but he wanted that money and fame badly.
>>
>>9564828
Kek. That guy really is never going to finish winds of winter. We've just been memeing about it but it seems like it's real. I don't really care, but I do feel kinda bad for all the fans that have been waiting patiently while being continuously disappointed by this tub of lard.
>>
>>9564886
>but look at where it has gotten him

yeah, all of that fuck-you money and worldwide acclaim really came back to bite him in the ass

he def should have remained a largely anonymous nobody and then quietly died of a heart attack at a red lobster in delaware, leaving his works to be posthumously produced so that he couldn't enjoy any of the fruits of his work
>>
>>9564863
>>9564886
Everything was going to shit before he became famous though, after the disappointment of A Storm of Swords people were sceptical as fuck of him.

I've waited so long I really don't care. I've come to realize that the mystery of a story is always better than the reveal. No matter what GRRM does, the hype about what he might do will always outcompete him. Where the Others came from or if there's a Great Northern Plot or the Littlefinger Debt Scheme will never be as satisfying as theorizing about these things. I honestly don't really care if he finishes the series anymore.
>>
>>9565373
The secret never matches the mystery. If your entire story is only interesting because of the mysteries, the ending will fall apart. You can never write a reveal which matches the hype.

Martin signed a deal 2 years after he had finished his 3rd book, when he thought he was about to finish his fourth. The wait between the first two was never longer than two years, and he thought he would only need five novels.

He just misjudged his ability to keep writing that series. It's been a dozen years since he first talked screen adaptations and he's no closer to terminus.

It's no ones fault but his own.
>>
>>9566640
What's slowly begun to dawn on me is that it's really possible that Martin just doesn't fucking know how to end the books. That he may just not be a good enough writer to pull all the shit he's put in the series together to a satisfying conclusion. Tolkien could do it. Wolfe could do it. Outside of fantasy you've got great writers like Faulkner and Melville who could juggle complex plots with lots of characters and multiple points of view. Martin just may not be in that caliber, and so while he was good enough to set all this in motion, he's not good enough to bring it to a halt. He has bumped his fat shaggy head against the ceiling of his own talents.

He might not have been as popular as Tolkien or Rowling pre-GoT but he was easily one of the top 5 most popular contemporary fantasy writers even before the TV series. >People who unironically like ASoIaF ITT
Get the fuck out of /lit/

You don't seem to realize how /lit/ used to be great, before beasts like you ruined it. Now the mods side with the mediocre, with the rabble, with you; they will ban anyone telling your kind to get the fuck out. They helped make this place more like reddit; and it just keeps getting worse, as reddit users come, and just see the garbage, the retarded shit, the dumb sci-fi, fantasy, pleb threads, and go "woah this board is actually quite like reddit but with another template," so we have to deal with them, and they start to form sort of gangs, and will side against anything rare or noble to further wallow in their mediocrity like an animal in its shit. Most of them must be fat fucks, gamers and losers.

Some of them can be reared into respectable people, but they must encounter anons with unfathomable arrogance backed up by true knowledge of the subject matter. The good ones will feel terrible about themselves, and will remake themselves. They will read the good books, they will despise their former selves, and attempt to create a new personality, bringing about their maturity.

The others are just too low-blood to make it, probably the descendants of products of incest or the sludge of some peasant caste in a past age, the kind with big foreheads and squinted faces, who hunker through the streets and yell at anyone they deem "tryhard" or "hipster," words true for some but used falsely by them against anything or anyone remotely Olympian. These must be simply embarrassed with ad hominems, doxes, literary gang rape and dunce caps until they get the fuck out for good. That's all they can understand, so we speak their language.

Since we stopped doing this like we used to, the board now lacks the atmosphere of an old e/lit/e french salon fused with the violent Greek ἀγών which it once possessed.

We don't have experts to come in and shit on newplebs, tell them to go back to reading catcher in the rye: we've let people who fap off to DFW actually have threads and not shame them out of here, and the American election has made everyone care about petty politics more than the canon, so you get effete antifa wannabees and braindead alt-right meme-spouters bickering about who is more sophisticated when neither of them read anything written prior to the nineteenth century.

If we want the board to be good we have to shit on people all the time and cultivate a culture of elitism again.

In order to achieve this, we must make the reddit users feel not welcome, and ruin their chances at an actual discussion of whatever their mediocrity brought them to enjoy. They must lose all incentive to come here. This incentive is fundamentally that they find a platform which allows to partake in such discussion. This platform must be destroyed; we must insult, humiliate and harass them until they can no longer find any pleasure in coming here.

>instead of writing the best fantasy trilogy ever he chose to do this
>he's now saying he might need 8 books to finish

End me.

No, it wasn't. Brienne isn't anywhere close to Winterfell. She's off delivering Jaime to undead Catelyn. I don't even get why Martin would be pissed off about supposed "spoilers." The books are completely different. Not just in what happens, but in the amount of characters that don't appear in the show.

>People who unironically like ASoIaF ITT
Get the fuck out of /lit/.

Brother, you are fighting an uphill battle. 4chan's last nail in the coffin was Trump's election win. After this started a massive influx of insecure young men who call themselves 'the alt right' and heard about 4chan on the news or on Twitter. This new movement appropiated long cherised 4chan memes like Pepe or Feel Guy for their fascist ideology. This new movement is a group of people who for the first time in 4chan history take this website seriously and post unironically. My 15 year old brother literally let me listen to fucking VAPORWAVE yesterday, asking if I know this 'meme'. Look at Twitter, look at Facebook, it's infested with stuff that once was part of 4chan's unique culture. Even journalists and self-appointed 'thinkers' adopt 4chan slang on social media (see that god awful VICE journalist Aris Roussinos, who tweets every day in a green texting manner (GREEN TEXTING IS NOT EVEN FOOKING POSSIBLE OUTSIDE THIS WEBSITE)). 4chan seized to be a niche website for creative and troubled people. It is in a process of transforming to some right wing forum, social media stuff. moot saw this coming and bailed. Now we have 4chan premium passes and shit. Fuck this website. It's dead.

That might hold some water if he wasn't clearly fucking miserable. The guy enjoys football more than he does writing, he could've done everything he's doing now on a writer's salary.

all culture will be nerd culture soon. nerd fandom is insanely profitable. get ready for fastfood chains to have their own cinematic universes with wikis full of lore.

newfag detected

ASOIAF was talked about here before it was a show. You're forgetting how good those first 3 books are.
>>
I honestly just don't care anymore if it comes out. I cared a whole hell of a lot a few years ago but his slow ass writing and how piss poor the TV show is has killed any desire in me to see the series concluded.

It's inconsistent with what came before it, but them taking forever to get anywhere was one of the shittiest parts of the books.

>Isn't renowned for his prose style
>fans don't like him for his way with words

You've revealed the precise problem. A good authour has a way with words. He doesn't. Therefore, he's not a good authour.

>b-b-but muh world building!Muh politics! Muh intrigue!

World building is quantity of writing, not quality, which he is too lazy to even keep up with.

Every political "faction" is nearly identical. If theyre not identical, theyre stereotypical and one dimensional, "muh honor ", "muh money", we wuz mongols n shieet.

Character development is a farce. You never learn how the characters "grow", only "what happens to them". This is because they are stale templates who have the same kind of one dimensional beliefs as the factions. Characters are often written into a hole (in the ground).

Furthermore, this fat lazy fuck has stopped writing because the plot got spoiled. Absolutely pathetic. He knows his entire series hangs not on good writing, prose, or even good plot development , but simply on withholding information from an audience marketed to have emotional investment in his pulp-tier fiction.

I hope he dies of a heart attack, and soon.

Brienne of Tarth is running around in the TV series, but [she gets killed off in the book by a Fire enchanted Catyln Stark, but the "one word" Brienne screams before they hang her could have saved her and Podrick Payne if GRRM wanted it]. So many contradictory plots may have made writing the book impossible. Which version is Canon at this point?

She doesn't die. Jaime sees her after that scene you are talking about. She tells him to come alone, claiming she's taking him to the Hound. What contradictory plots are you speaking of? I'd be happy to try and unconfuse you, I have a really good memory.
I quit watching the show in the second or third season because I was getting frustrated by the changes from the books.
Lots of hate for George and "genre fiction" ITT. Isn't all fiction genre? You guys who hate "genre fiction" - do you hate ALL fantasy/scifi/cyberpunk, etc? What about mystery? Technothriller? Western? Apocalyptic?
Man, I feel sorry for you.
>>
>>9564839
Absolutely, and people who say otherwise are delusional.

The show is all about showing not telling, and they do a fantastic job of compressing the major plot elements down to create a better paced narrative that manages to balance tension and character building.

The books, on the other hand, are incredibly deep and detailed, but they have no sense of momentum, at least not for the last 3. They've become so bloated by their own scale, and George's desire to fit EVERYTHING on page, that they feel overwhelmed by the details at expense of the plot.

The show has had some really notable misses in its adaptions, the Dorne storyline, and having Dany fuck about for 3 seasons while Westeros is infinitely more interesting, but for the most part it's become a far better way to tell the ASOIAF story than the books
>>
>>9564828

I am delusional, evidently, because the overwhelming detail you mention is exactly why I love the series. The huge scope and interweaving storylines, the insane butterfly effects...it's what turned me on to begin with. You like the way things are condensed in the show, and I despise that. And you mentioned some things they missed, but there are a hundred more.

>You guys who hate "genre fiction" - do you hate ALL fantasy/scifi/cyberpunk, etc?
No. Genre fiction refers to works which rely upon the stock tropes and archetypes of their genre, never stepping out of it. It's thoughtless writing. Think WoW books, or many Conan the Barbarian stories.

I don't hate the 1% of genre fiction that is actually good.
>>
>>9577080
Sure, but that's no worse a ratio than any of the old genres. Like chivalric romance, or pastoral romance -- Don Quixote's great, but a lot of the books it shits on weren't.

>Severian's tale was not a good arc or ending
You're right, it was an incredible arc and ending. If you can't appreciate an accelerating conclusion you are a pleb among plebs. Reading the ending to Book of the New Sun is like being strapped into one of those G-force machines at NASA. The raw majesty of the prose and thematic depth contained within those pages contains enough force to violently blow your hair back, push your eyes to the back of your skull and cause readers of weaker constitutions to bleed from their pores.

What I remember of the death of Brienne is [ she is found by Undead Catlyn with a Lannister sword, and is considered to be a traitor, and hung along with Podrick Payne, Tyrion's squire, and a third found companion, and as she's being hoisted up,she screams a name. And the only name that would save them is the priest she explained her mission to find Arya to,who knows her sincere commitment to the cause ] .
>>
>>9575921
You were frustrated by changes from the book so you stopped watching? That's really silly anon
>>
>>9564835
why can't they just let it die?
>>
>>9577861
Catelyn gave her a choice. Sword or noose.
Sword meant kill Jaime/lead him to his death, essentially. Noose was be hanged.
She screamed a 'word', not a 'name'. That word was evidently 'sword'.
Later on, in a Jaime chapter, after he settles the Bracken/Blackwood siege, Brienne shows up, claiming that she found the Stark girl, and that he must "come alone, or the Hound will kill her." Also, Cersei hears by raven that Jaime has gone off alone with some woman.
>>
>>9578005
Well, the little changes didn't bother me. It was the big ones. Plus I thought some of the casting was god-awful (not as bad as the HP movies, though).
I may give it another try someday, especially if he never publishes the final 2-3.
