Why on earth would you want to learn ancient Greek. How would that benefit you save for reading a few manuscripts? Most of the good stuff is translated, many times over, and excellently so. I don't get it.

Because all you're reading is a another person's phrasing. Translations often require a lot of creative rewording. They're not perfect copies.
