Homage to Catalonia isn't anything particularly good either. If you have the edition with a bunch of essays, it's one mindnumbingly boring book so anyone with that edition is advised to stop reading after HtC.

Orwell respectfully wrote about those in poverty in Down and Out, Road to Wigan Pier, etc. He shows a lot of empathy, there's some very endearing and bittersweet elements in the book. Worth a read if poverty is a theme that interests you.
