Post-modern elitists enjoy shitting on Dickens, but he's probably the greatest character writer ever to put pen to paper. He also understood the human condition and presented his philosophies in an understated tone throughout the narrative, often playing into the narrative perfectly. Favorite book of his is either Hard Times or Copperfield.
