/lit/ 2017 top 100 poll results!

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Hello /lit/! It's me, the polling anon, back at you again with the results of the poll.

I closed voting 1 week ago and since have been spending my time counting the votes and constructing the graphic. I had to get some help from my friend, who will remain nameless, but to whom I owe endless thanks and gratitude.

In the first couple days of polling, I accidentally left the poll in such a state that it was possible to vote multiple times. Accordingly, I was able to go through and, by hand, compare votes that appeared to be made arbitrarily close to one another, or had suspicious parallels in style and content. Thus, I have conflated the votes that seemed too suspicious to be true. I've spent a lot of hours on this, and I can confidently say that next to no legitimate votes were affected and illicit votes were reduced to a negligible minimum.

I've also received a number of fake titles and authors, some of which were amusing. I saw a Gregory Berrycone or two, a number of plays on Thomas Pynchon's name, and youtubers. While I had to discount these votes, I have to say they brought a smile to my face as I was laboring over this for you guys.

Anyways, this is the last of me you'll be seeing for a while, but sometime next year we can conduct another poll...

Anyways, signing off,
The Polling Anon

P.S. How many out of 100 have you read?

I voted and none of my votes got on the list. Seeing as it was based on a point system, atleast my first choice would've showed up if there were few people voting. The 2015 didn't have that many people for instance, I think, and so some books got on the list with only 1 or so votes. This is a weird list.

>>
Yeah, this list is really strange including what >>9544556 said, plus how Everything Flows made it on there and not Life and Fate, and how Gormenghast is above LotR, and how fucking Lolita is nowhere to be found. There's definitely a greater focus on classical classical stuff like the Greeks, the Decameron, Rabelais etc., but also more sci-fi/fantasy shit at the same time. Are these the result of a smaller sample size leading to greater deviation or what? Some of the changes are good for sure, but to me Lonesome Dove is not a top 100 book by any stretch of the imagination

wtf how can lolita not be on there

OP is a biased faggot for sure

finnegans wake is memed to #4

OP literally said they discarded votes based on how they felt. So it is very likely they altered the result to have Lolita removed. The list does look more Christian friendly than previous years.

I shouldn't have to answer that.

I hate everything Japanese because it's bad and only ever relevant because it's Japanese.

Japan doesn't make good anything (outside of craft, like teapots I guess) but this boards always loads down their favorites lists with Japanese shit because it's Asian but accessible. Same with Truffaut and Godard back in the 60s, Japan is just Asia light for westerners.

There have been so many red flags raised about the way the list has been put together without even needing to consider how long the poll was open that we can pretty much confirm that this isn't the real Polling Anon and this isn't a legitimate /lit/ top 100.
>>9545275

>>
>>9545288
Then why did you leave out the vote counts this time. And this black box discarding of votes is incredibly suspicious given /lit/ favorites that have been near the top for years are now completely gone. e.g. all the people talking about how lolita is missing completely.

Also this list looks suspect. It's completely different from the previous one, which was made less than a year ago. Rabelais, for example. Cool to see him on the list, but how many votes did that get? Meanwhile, Lolita, which is memed constantly and was number 5 on the last list is not even present? Even though there are two other Nabokov novels? The Fall but not The Stranger? The Stranger gets discussed constantly while The Fall is barely mentioned. Infinite Jest at #42?Something is up with the way you collected this data because this list is weird as fuck.

23/100 which is less than half of what I have on the previous list. There are some books on here I have literally never seen mentioned before.

This list is, unironically, the best list we have ever made, by some distance.

Which means it was almost certainly faked, cause there's no way /lit/ has taste this good.

But I think we should just take this chart and run with it because it actually is quality. I think it's really admirable (and more than a little funny) what Polling Anon tried to pull here.

I think a lot of /lit/ has read The Divine Comedy, and the rest who haven't may or many not vote for it (and similar classics) just because they should be up there for their influence and merits, which is reasonable. Settel's Traum and Finnegan's Wake are stale memes that shouldn't be there.
>>
>>9545570
It's difficult if you spent the past 10 years of your life reading Harry Potter on repeat, like most of r/books

all this is making me agree with
>>9545542

At this point, even if this is rigged (which it's looking more and more likely) I don't care. It's hilarious.
>>
>>9545583
I thought the same thing. The more I look at the list the more suspicious it becomes: a lot of masterpieces regularly discussed on this board are just completely missing. It probably is rigged, but I actually agree with the position of a few books for once. It also really is rather amusing.
>>
>>9545546
Thanks.

Ah, yeah, after reading the list I realised it must have been fucked with, so I don't have to feel bad about missing out on the voting.

But if they were gonna fake the list, why not make it all good instead of just making it good enough to be vaguely /lit/ but still worse than any real critical list?

When did I say the books on the list were bad? I just said that they don't accurately reflect the tastes of this board. I like Pale Fire more than Lolita, but there's absolutely no way that it's reflective of this board's tastes. Sometimes there are multiple threads just about Lolita. Just going by number of ratings on goodreads, Lolita is more widely read by a factor of 17x. Another example- Everything That Rises Must Converge. Great collection of stories but, if anything, the Complete Stories (or Wise Blood) would be on the list. I never see that specific collection brought up in isolation. Are you just giving me a hard time here or are you actually too thick to comprehend the point I'm making?

>A shitty compendium of russian science fiction stories also found its way into the last list, maybe its my fault but i failed to see a fitting equivalent in the new one.

Pros related to the new list.
>Anna karenina
>Faust
>The better Nabokovs
>Two Thomas Manns though buddenbrooks still is unarguably his best book from a general /lit/ perspective
>Grossmann
>Jin yong
>Grass
>Maupassant
>arno schmidt also is kind of nice i guess.

Cons
>Bulgakov still on the list.
>The glass bead game wouldnt even be considered toilet paper in germany
>Infinite jest still on the list
>Too many japs
>What the fuck is boris pasternak doing on any booklist
>While fictiones are the most influental the aleph mightve been a better choice from a /lit/ perspective

everything else is either unchanged or i dont have the expertise

I dont see how this list is any worse than the last one as the pre bible canon is pretty much excluded from competition and a wholedly different discipline. Also rankings are inherently stupid.

I fully support YeCarthy being banned from the charts. He's terribly overrated and the only reason he appears in the top 10 is insecure Americans who can't even compete with Russians inflating his popularity. (This is true).

Authors and books that should be banned:

>Vonnegut
>Schmidt, Moore, Finnegan's Wake

The 2016 list was perfectly fine, probably the best and most accurate this board has produced yet. I remember the thread when OP started the polling and people said that 2016 should be replaced because it had meme stuff like Zettels Traum and Jerusalem that nobody's actually read. Well I guess we fixed that now by having Traum on a higher place and also Women and Memes on the chart!
This chart is one big pile of bullshit. Not only is it completely unnecessary at this point in time, but the votes are unrepresentative of /lit/'s taste because there was way, way too little promotion (I saw literally one thread about it) and those cretins from discord apparently hijacked it. You can't have a book like Infinite Jest just drop 40 places in seven months and a shitton of obscurities somehow "appear" in the lower half. And let's not mention the stupidity of the "Collected works". The number of people on this board who have read the complete works of any of those writers can be counted on an amputee's fingers.

Tl;dr: OP, fuck off and die

And I just love the idiots itt that complain or are happy about some books being/not being on the list. This list isn't supposed to be about you and your taste, it's supposed to reflect the taste of the community, you stupid redditors.
>>
>>9549144
>This list isn't supposed to be about you and your taste, it's supposed to reflect the taste of the community
Full agreement, this is what I think nobody understands when it comes to these charts. It's just a general guage, which is why the top 10 always remains the same, but there are subtle changes from year to year, like the year christposting went in full swing the chart had Aquinas and Augustine on it, and also how there has been a steady decline of Celine and Pessoa who used to be huge on /lit/.

There hasn't been a poll on 4chan since, and I doubt anyone else here has seen a recurring thread, which is usually open for days in the catalog. This was probably some jackasses in the discord server who decided to make their own top 100 chart. I would have voted the book of disquiet, the trial, and maldoror.
