I think a good ending is more important in a short story than a novel.
I don't tend to 'do' short stories but I recently finished The Man Who Walked Through Walls and Other Stories by Marcel Aymé. It's a really eclectic mixed bag and I'd throughly recommend checking it out for some inspiration.

usually the way you write a short story is that you write down a memory of a longer story if that makes any sense at all
