Eh, it's alright. Sometimes Dostoevsky just rambles on and on and on which bores the shit out of me. When I get to a section with philosophical dialogues they're only a couple of pages. Maybe the last 1/2 will be better.

Tolstoy is so much better at writing it's not even funny.

Working my way through Fitzgerald's Iliad. Just got to Book Five I believe, been putting off reading a lot though despite enjoying the book a lot. I feel like the argument between Agamemnon and Achilles hasn't been dissected properly as an ethical dilemna in modern terms, and that question (and others like it, such as Paris challenging and cheating Menalaos) so cleanly drives the rest of the narrative, at least from what I've read.

I did the CoMC reading group around Christmas time, and although I found it comfy and entertaining with some possible implied criticism, I, ultimately, felt that it had been a waste of time. I felt that what one puts in to reading that semi-commercialized crowd pleasing behemoth is not adequately returned. Is there anything you can tell me to change my mind / make me feel that I didn't waste that many hours of my life? I can see how, in your case, that it might be nice to unwind and take breathers with something as light at the CoMC while you're reading Ulysses simultaneously.

Finished it last night. Boy was it a ride. Salinger is an excellent short story writer. If you think The Catcher in the Rye or Salingwr are memes, get some real education and read this book. You'll thank me later.
>>
>>9544086
whats Augustus like? I'm considering checking it out. I enjoyed I, Claudius and Stoner.
>>
>>9544284
I'd say that Augustus is just as heavy in feeling as Stoner was for me (and should be for any man willing to accept and embody the circumstances of any given time and then live out the experiences of said time). The structure is particularly interesting. The entire novel is a compilation of letters. We see a myriad of perspectives on each circumstance, and the development of these characters through their individual voices is extremely personal in feeling. Due to the rate of events occurring at a much slower rate when compared to Stoner, Augustus, as a result of this, moves much slower (I also find myself reading it at a much slower rate). This is not to say, by any means, that this work drags. There is just significantly more attention given to detail (visually in addition to the complicated webs of intrigue). I would certainly recommend it to anyone who either enjoys Williams' other works or who is interested in possessing beautiful images of Rome's personages and its culture.
>>
>>9544314
thanks for the reply, it sounds like what I hoped it would be. I'll check it out.

I was going to read the rest of Salinger's stories and novellas (Franny and Zooey, the ones you mentioned, the three recently undisclosed stories), but I think I'll do it later. I need to digest his Nine Stories thoroughly first.

> 1984

About halfway through. It's kinda nice, but I really preferred Brave New World's take on the whole dystopia thing. The people in 1984 are sad and poor, while I though the people in BNW were actually happy, even if it was artificial. They were just blissful in their ignorance, while the people in 1984 are angry because they have to defend propaganda that they know deep inside their minds is untrue. Also, BNW showed that sex is, in fact, soma. 1984 thinks that sex is some kind of freeing act of rebellion. I personally disagree with that, because I really find sex to be the earliest form of soma for the early man. Of course it's useful for reproduction and all, but that is why climax gives that drug-like, indefatigable sensation of utter numbness, of no feeling- artificially produced to encourage mass reproduction, perhaps?

Anyway, enjoying the book thus far. Will keep updating.
>>
>>9549950
How hostile, if you never read every now and again as an indulgence then you are neglecting one of the purposes of literature.
I understand the importance of Moby Dick however I do wonder if there is some element that I am missing, rather like how some people read Catcher in the Rye and love it while others have no opinion. Is there is some human experience I have yet to have that would make the work resonate? Does it speak to people and draw them in? What about the book makes people want to read it? Is it simply to wander in the symbolism or understand the beginnings of the modern novel? Does the style capture your attention? I understand not everyone who reads Moby Dick enjoys it, and that it is still an important work regardless, but I am asking those who do enjoy it - Why?

It's meh. It started good, but now I'm halfway trough and I still don't know where this is going. They just sit in the room or walk around whilst talking about everyday things. Yeah, we learn about their lives in the meantime, but it doesn't seem to be really amounting up to anything.

I've heard people complain that there's no plot to Journey to the End of the Night. I don't share that opinion, but those people would probably toss this one in the trash in the first 100 pages if plot is the concern.

Simply put, if you fancy yourself as an appreciator of literature, you need to force yourself to see what is good in Moby Dick otherwise you are hopeless.
1. Melville is quite sophisticated philosophically so if you are not, it may be of benefit to educate yourself in that respect.
2. His prose style is as excellent as it gets in the 19th century. This is a simple fact.
3. His psychological exploration is something anyone with interest in learning about themselves can appreciate. Maybe if you are content with being mediocre and letting the world happen to you it may be of less interest but I assume you are not like that.
4. Melville was a good chap and you should read everything he wrote.

I forgot one major point and I forgot it I suppose because it is so obvious to me, but Moby Dick is a hilarious book. If you are not laughing the whole time you are reading you are doing it very wrong.
>>
I'm a little over half-way through Moby Dick and I'm starting to think it's way overrated.

Let's be honest - the cetology shit is boring. It's tedious and it weakens the narrative.

>Infinite Jest, which I reread every summer, and Finnegans Wake by James Joyce

>>9540867
Holy shit were you on the Manhattan bound N train a few days ago in the evening? I was on the train and this fat fucking loser's belly entered the train 5 seconds before he did, plops down across the cart from me, he has that homeless person smell like he hasn't showered except he's clearly a living-with-his-mom guy, and he opens a copy of this boom I've never seen anyone else reading called Omensetters Luck. A woman on the complete other side of,the cart had a book open and he saw this, pointed his head and put his hand over his brow as if blocking out light so he can see farther, and he was trying to see what the cover of the woman's book said. Then he just starts smiling like a fucking serial killer, still looking at the woman. The woman glances over at him and immediately looks away, just another nutjob on the subway. The fat fuck smiles and shakes his head, as if harshly judging what the woman was reading, perhaps it was too "pleb" for his clearly intellectually superior self. Then he sees I'm reading Finnegans Wake across from him, and says "that's a great book." I pretend I don't know he's talking to me. Louder, he repeats himself. Now the entire train is looking at us. I say "th-thanks" and put my nose back in the book. "... for a 12 year old" he says. Now, I'm on my way to MMA which I do 6 days a week, and I'm not that great but I know I can fucking kill this guy if I got into it with him. I put my book on my lap and look him dead in the eye. Getting a glimpse at my pec cleavage, broad shoulders, traps, and overall hardened athletic frame, and scar on my neck that looks like I survived someone slitting my throat (but really just from an accident when I was baking piping madeleines in my Proust phase) his body language changed from cocky and cheeky to insecure and back-in-high-school-around-people-who-know-he's-a-fucking-pussy. "s-sorry" he said, eyes down in his book. I remember thinking to myself the only people this intellectually insecure and visibly disgusting at the same time are most people who browse /lit/ regularly. What a fucking loser.

If this was you you should fucking kill yourself. I bet it was too, only someone that snarky would leave a two-line comment about the obscure bullshit he's reading likely seeking validation for your shitty hipster taste. No, go fuck yourself.

I probably don't qualify as being your generation so I don't understand these things but what about just kind of having a tipsy conversation where you are excited about each other and then maybe kissing but not immediately shoving it in her meat hole because she's so wasted she doesn't care what goes in there anymore?

I like Celine's style a lot, and this one reads especially fast. I'm reading the Stanford Luce translation which seems pretty good. I'm not a huge French lit guy, so a lot of the references are probably going over my head.
