How do those of you who work in low end jobs read at work without being made fun of/harassed?

>work at McDonalds (pic related)
>recently started bringing books to work with me to read on my lunch breaks
>other workers treat me with suspicion and make jokes (not all of them just a few)
>been reading 'Climate Wars' by Gwynne Dyer which is about the future of Geo-Politics in the world of climate change
>other co-workers are idiots, many deny climate change and make fun of me for it
>they always say things like 'you reading that stupid burger ban book again?' because they think climate change is a conspiracy to ban hamburgers
>have to cover the book in clingfilm because one of them keeps throwing beef patties at the book to try and destroy it
>everytime I try and point out that the book uses actual data and models and interviews with intelligent retired generals they just laugh
>tell them that climate change threatens the food supply
>they always have the same 3 responses
>'it only threatens food because liberals want to destroy cars and we won't be able to use the drive thru'
>'it won't threaten your food supply when I make you eat that book'
>'maybe it threatens the food supply of skinny anorexic weaklings like you who eat ice cubes that will melt'
>tfw they make fun of me een if I bring different books

How do I do it? The managers don't care.
>>
What does it matter what they think? You can't expect an underclass with their own struggles and hardships to care for an abstract geopolitical issue when it calls for personal sacrifice. Just leave them alone anon and get to a position where your own thoughts matter
>>
Read ebooks on your phone and pretend to be a normie drone on Facebook or whatever they do.

Or just don't talk to them.

I worked as a cook at a shitty fast food restaurant last summer and read Dante on my dinner breaks
Everyone else was a latino highschooler or a white drug-addicted hick but they told me it was interesting, one assistant manager said he read a simplified version and liked it then told me about different Lovecraft stories he enjoyed
The qt cashier jailbait girls would come ask me to tell them about other books I brought
But it's also probably because I wasn't from their shithole rural appalachian town, and some kid who goes to college in a city coming by for a couple months seemed completely alien

I am a maintenance technician for automated machinery. Essentially I only do work when a machine isn't working properly so when everything is running well I have a good bit of do nothing time. I bring my Kindle to work and my co-workers aren't retards or niggers so the sight of some one reading isn't completely astonishing for them. I am the only one who reads (things not on their phone), though.
>>
>>9529297
used my kindle at a receptionist job, asked atleast twice a day "can ye--...can ye git fissbook on it?"
>>
>>9529297
Be selective about what books you read there.

I'd brought dozens of books to read at work (during breaks) and nobody said anything. One day I brought The Second Sex and got a mixture of shocked stares (thinking it was pornographic/erotica) or jeers. The couple of people that cared enough to ask "what the fuck are you reading" stared at me blankly or with confused looks when I explained it was a feminist text, as though I were speaking Chinese. I may have well have said it was about has anyone really decided as to even go that far in wanting to do to look more like.

actually depends on how retarded the people you work with are
and this has nothing to do with the inteligence/rank of the job
it's everywhere
i'd recommend you get an unoffensive widely approved cover that you put around your book so as to make it look like it's the song of ice and fire or something similarly irrelevant

or and now listen this idea i got it while shitting 45 minutes ago
you don't try to explain why you are reading something or what type of ideology you have
instead you tell them "Ah it was recommended by a friend"

never initiate political discussions

Not him but very few of my classmates read. They say they don't have enough "time" for it.

This gives me the perfect opportunity to ask you guys a rather strange question. So I normally read in my car during my hour lunch breaks but my AC is broken and it's becoming unbearably hot to read in there so I'm thinking I'm going to start reading in my company break room. The issue is that I'm currently reading Paradise Lost and it's the Penguin Classics edition with a painting of Eve nude in Paradise on the cover. Would it be weird to bring a book with a nude woman on the cover into work? I'm thinking maybe I'll just put it in a plastic bag or something. I realize how silly this is but unfortunately not everybody in this world is rational and I can imagine someone deeming it "not work appropriate" and complaining. If it were cold out I would just hide it in my jacket or something. Am I over thinking this? Pic related is the edition.

i worked at a car rental kiosk in an airport and i spent 70% of my time reading. there were only like 10 planes that would come and go in a day and almost no one needed to rent cars so i just sat and read. there were also restaurants and shit around so i could get coffee or whatever it was great.

one night i was driving home and texting my girlfriend at the time something about how i wanted to see her tits and stuff, but i accidentally sent it to my boss. it was so fucking embarrassing. ended up quitting after i found something else.

If I fuck around on the phone, that's more or less accepted, but if I decide to read a book, that's too blatant. So instead of actually getting some reading done, I'm forced to spend my time doing boring, vapid shit like reading twitter and facebook.

You threaten them. Your indifference towards their social approval incites in them a need to indoctrinate you into terms that they can understand so as to validate themselves and justify their collective, extensive complacency.

Indifference works, but they are your coworkers. Coming off as too much of a loner autist can be grounds for getting fired if shit gets too toxic. Just practice distance a bit more

I work as a tour guide for a 18th century jail, so the 99% of the time there's nobody there for a tour I can do what I want, after i get my light (very very light) admin work done. Though I don't read in the office as I feel that would be excessive, so I read epubs on my laptop. I'm fairly certain I could get way with reading a book, but I am scared to cross that line between clearly not working and probably not working but with room for doubt.
>>
I work night shift in a fetish dungeon at a sex shop. We only get busy on weekends so I get the chance to read multiple books in a 10-11 hour shift. I'm in a basement isolated from the rest of the shop. Managers don't care what I do as long as I pull in a few high ticket sales.

Comfiest job I've ever had. Worked in nothing but a jockstrap one day. Helped beat a slave a few hours ago. Collared one of my coworkers today and she gave me head while I smoked a cigarette.

>>9530497

The girl who resurfaces porn escaped from a psych ward that burned down a couple days later and was considered legally dead for five years until she was pulled over by the cops. She squirted breast milk across the store. She's in a gang called the "Ruthless Cunts" and they beat up women for you.

I get fedoralords trying to sell me self-published doujins every week.

I've had the opportunity to hook up with girls who have real vore fetishs.

The Dungeon Master has two slaves and eight full time subs. His ex-boyfriend broke into his house, made his pit bulls start fighting each other, beat the slaves, burned his mattress, and smoked meth in his bathroom. The master had to leave the shop to beat him up and make sure his slaves where safe.

The job is really fucking boring for the most part. Fitting people for metal cock rings and shocking people's balls with Neon Wands becomes routine like anything else. It's how easy the job is that keeps me there.

Two things, find a job that is literally anything besides taco bell, maccys, BK, wendys, or basically any fast food joint. subway is the most acceptable from what I hear but just fill out job apps for stocking shelves or manning a cash register anywhere.

That said, tell them in no uncertain terms to fuck off. If they persist, tell the managers you will report to HR, or basically any gov't agency you can complain to. If you have to go this course, tape your verbal harassment, as much audio as you can get, make backup copies, and threaten legal action. Record your conversation of complaining to the managers first as well. They will shit bricks if you have audio of them basically saying there's nothing they can do about repeated verbal harassment.

Central Ohio. I have a friend who was a DJ in the goth scene, he got hooked up with the job by doing fetish parties. Lot of overlap between both subcultures. It used to be a front for running bath salts but the business is all legit now. Slavery is the highest level of submission with the BDSM lifestyle. It means signing away all rights and property to a Master for a lifetime. A Dom(me) is elevated to Master, a sub is degraded to slave. Look up some of the legal problems with BDSM in general. It's an insular subculture that primarily governs itself.

I'm gonna give you a tip kid. Its gonna help you a lot in life. If people are so ostentatiously retarded that they criticize you for reading then you should not associate with them. Ignore them. Alternatively, if you want to be socially accepted, start ragging on them back, or bring in a book that rips on a particular coworker. Eventually it will even out, but you aren't actually not playing their game, you're half playing it, so basically they think they're winning. Either ignore them hard or joke back. This is the best work tip in this thread.

i have really struggled with whether and how to respond to this. The execution of this message was very nice and respectful, and I genuinely appreciate that. The premise, however, is problematic. Maybe not inherently, but within the context of the sexist society we live in. Men are allowed, and often feel compelled, to think out loud at women, to share unsolicited not necessarily informed thoughts at women. (And usually these men, unlike you, don’t even seem to recognize that their thoughts may not be useful.) Women on the other hand aren’t allowed to be as open. So, if you want to not just be respectful, but actually be anti-oppression, it is better (IMO) not to respond to a woman’s work with the types of thoughts that other men pawn off as insights, if you know what i mean. again, i appreciate your honesty, but i feel obligated to point these things out.

people will think of you as snobby, especially since the cover will garner their attention.

and how could you really appreciate Paradise Lost in a crowded lunchroom?

t. never read Paradise Lost

True about the snobby thing. My lunch room is usually empty because everybody goes to their cars on lunch.

thats sad, humans are essentially social and not utilizing meals to meet social needs speaks of an inhibiting culture, but I guess you can read Paradise Lost in peace.

just read Paradise Loft in lunchbreaks and try to laugh it off if someone mentions the cover, most people never heard of Milton anyway

>>
>>9540037
For them to comment on the book, they should at least have read it. Explaining the title and what one enjoys with the book might give them some leverage to actually obtain the book and read it for themselves. Do not take it as a burden, enjoy that someone finds your hobbies interesting, anon.

When i was on the other side, i have seen girl reading A Dance with Dragons so i recommended her A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, later we talked about Star Wars, i recommended her Thrawn´s trilogy while she told me about Death Troopers.

So get your grade 12 Ricky, vertually everybody on /lit/ is capable of that.

GED isn't too hard.

If you can do some sort of adult diploma course there are a bunch of courses where you can basically write nonsense bullshit answers and pass.

If you want people to never know you failed high-school finish a college course and that part of your life gets erased from history more or less.
