What are some books into the history of China since Mao/pre-Mao or anything required to understand the political/economic/social/culture of modern day China?
OP here; I want to understand more the struggles and issues modern china faces today - like income inequality and the rural disparities - any recommendations?
While they are focused on geopolitics, books by Robert David Kaplan will give you a very in-depth understanding of modern Chinese problems.
One thing you have to understand though, Marxism is dead in China, but entire power structures relies on glorifying Mao.

i started reading "the search for modern china" by jonathan spence. i never managed to finish it since it is quite extensive but it seemed like a good place to get an understanding of modern china through its history. he starts with the fall of the ming dynasty so it's a broad definition of "modern".
The Party by McGregor or some other Scottish name. About the Chinese communist party.
About income inequality? I don't know.
