Hi fellow scholars,

I'm beginning a self education in Poetry.

So far I have pic related, all of Shakespeares works, Vol 1 of Seamus Heaney's work, and the whole bloody internet.

I plan to read at least a poem or two a day. But I feel this is not enough. I want to learn poetry, to read it, understand it, and write it. I plan to spend at least an hour a day on this.

Any advice on who to read, and how to go about this?
>>
OP Here,
Just found the wiki.
I'll go through all the poets on there under the different movements as well.

I'm still very much open to any ideas and suggestions you all have though.
>>
Are you reading originals? Is English your first language?

yes, and yes.

Western Wind by Nims is the book you want. If it's too expensive, get a used older version.

I personally love my copy of it. A lot of people here would tell you to take Bloom with a grain of salt however, but he's still incredibly knowledgeable about poetry and literature in general.

no they wouldn't. people like bloom, the whole antibloom thing is recent and half ironic, half pol because he's jewish

Echoing what another anon said, it's a very good collection with good commentary. As you would expect with Bloom, it's all canonical authors with few surprises, but the selections are canon for a reason. Were it not for this book, I'd never have read Christina Rosetti, which would be a shame. This collection is probably the highest density of good poetry you can get in a collection, I think.
