The algorythm seems to be less efficient. I tried Krasznahorkai and stated that he was Hungarian on the first 30 questions, and it kept asking me if he was Norwegian/British/other. The closest it got was Zizek.

How the fuck does this actually work? I've been using it for years, but I went in right now and it really shocked me.

I was thinking of Hassan from the Kite Runner, and it fucking guessed it right on the first try, but the fucky thing is that it only asked 11 questions and none of them asked what country or even what region of the world it took place in, they were extremely generic, the most specific one was "Has this character ever killed anyone?"

It's just a (binary?) search tree. Probably does some interesting progamming stuff to account for don't knows and possiblies, but the basic product is simple. You start with a question that cuts 50% of the tree, like "Is your character male or female?" Ideally, each question would cut 50% of all the characters left. Most characters are reached in about 20 questions. If each question actually cut 50% of the results, then your character would be 1/2^20 or about 1/1,000,000.

But there's almost definitely not a million characters in their database/search tree, and it's also unlikely that each question cuts 50% of the tree. My first guess is that they cut around 20% with most questions, and the math sort of works out..If you cut 20% each time, then you're left with 80% to search through. 8^20 is about 1/100, which equals 50/5000, or 50 out of 5000 characters. That's pretty tough to narrow down, so they'll ask some more questions. .8^23 is about 5/1000 which is 25/5000. Still tough, let's ask two more questions. .8^25 is about 3/1000 which is 15/5000. Here, the program usually just chooses the most popular guess, and if they're wrong, they'll take you to another round and ask another 10 questions to narrow it even more (.8*35 = 4/10000 = 2/5000).

For your situation, where it only takes 11 questions, I would guess the program is aware of how common the answer is and it tries to target common answers. Again, maybe the best ideal is to cut 50% each time. .5^11 = 5/10000, or 1/5000. I imagine that because characters from YA books are so common, it tries to narrow them down to as close as the 50% rate as possible. Obviously it's doing something a little more clever than a basic binary search tree because it takes into account popularity.

Got confused when I said it wasn't a girl, because technically, female horses are known as "mares". Ended up getting it wrong at the end of the day. I stumped the Akinator, though I did it on a technicality, which is the best kind of stumping.
