I read this immediately after Homer and thoroughly enjoyed it. Herodotus was influenced by Homer's work and continues some of his themes. Overall I think i enjoyed it even more than Homer.

to accurately rely upon when
it comes to Greek history. Which book came before, you can never tell,
so grab a book and just infer
you're bound to discover some thing swell!

i would totally read this.

Theban Cycle, The Oresteia, Bacchae, and Medea. Throw in some Aristophanes for good measure. If you're going to transition to Roman lit afterwards, maybe end with the Argonautica.

When it comes to history, you could do The Histories, History of the Peloponnesian War, Xenophon's Anabasi, Hellenica, and Cyropaedia, then Anabasis Alexandri.

There's not much to gain from reading Hesiod besides a headache.
