I miss old /lit/
>>
>>9483905
the present /lit/ is now full of reddit fags. don't know where to move now.

It's your youth that you miss, not /lit/

I'm thinking about pursuing a uni course in writing and literature actually worth it? If I graduate, what will my career prospects be? I would prefer not to be a teacher, or anything that has do deal with the public.
>>
>>9483905
I didn't join early enough, but /lit/ does a need a little bloodletting.

>>9483920
I miss /fitlit/

>>9483962
Take a degree in Continental philosophy and/or Classics. Writing courses are a joke, and most literature departments blow. Classics will give you the ancient tongues to learn your grammar, so that you may write, and the greats of the ages so that you may learn to think.
>>
i don't know if i miss old /lit/ or not, the signal to noise ratio was worse on old /lit/ but there were smarter people around, so it was a trade off...50 stirner threads, 20 threads with pics of dfw face, etc. and then two or three good threads where you can seriously discuss something...well, i guess its like that now, but now you get these reddity fags who don't know shit saying they don't like the plot of the iliad or something, man fuck those dudes, they need to go back....i guess this is what happens when you allow unchecked immigration, it dilutes and fucks up the culture your ancestors worked so hard to create
>>
>>9483905
I miss the days when /lit/ was a haven for leftists. The board has deteriorated with the influx Christ-cucks and the alt-rightists. It's not that Christianity or right wing politics are the cause, but in general the leftists have always been better read.
>>
Neither /li/ had threads for people who actually wrote their own shit, so I don't miss either.
>>
>>9484068
the leftists are better read, but leftism gets so tiresome, i find it refreshing to see new view points, but yeah, some of those catholic kids have really stunted lives, they're too uptight to read like sarte in a coffee shop so they have to try to be cool by reading aquinas or something, it's like bro if ur that uptight then posing in coffee shops is not for you, go to jesus camp or something instead...also, i would like it if the rightwing kids at least read marx, marx and marxism has plenty of weak points to attack, but they don't even engage effectively. also, i hate rightwing kids who blame "jews" for everything, especially when they call people who aren't jews but are just successful capitalists jews, like david rockefeller, who was jew wise and slightly anti-semitic, which leads me to believe they are really the same kind of resentful slave moralists as the marxists but have done a s/capitalists/jews/g on all their posts...in case lit nigs arent nerdy enough the s/this/that/g is a regular expression for find and replace, but since ya'll fags claim to use latex i'm sure u knew that...
>>
>>9484069
to me the wannabe writer threads are the worst part of /lit/

>hur durr read my wacky short story i'm submitting to a literature blog with 20 hits per month

except leftists never move on from their established canon, which is basically masturbating to foucault and making ironic ayn rand threads over and over. Additionally, besides the already establishing contemporary po-mo lit garbage, they had a sincerely disgusting lust for pseudo-erotic literature like * insert random 50's-70's feminist writer* here as well as a complete disregard of any classics pre-20th century.

with the catholics, there's a thirst to find something - not even something necessarily spiritual or even christian - in modern works, I see a lot more serious threads about authors and more obscure recommendations than before

t. /lit/ poster circa 2011-13
>>
I started lurking in like 2013 or 2014. I think a resurgence of tripfags is in order
>>
>>9484185
>considers foucault a leftist
>thinks catholics haven a thirst for anything but priest jizz

yeah, i suppose foucault support leftists and even stalinist communist parties in his personal life, but his books use nietzsche's genealogical method and certainly aren't marxist

this is what i mean by it's too bad the rightist posters are so poorly read
>>
>>9484198
no thank you

do you remember when some retarded kid and his friends started to trip-shill threads for his "i was a 90's kid watching TMNT n shiet" poetry?
>>

are you telling me foucault isn't the intellectual pillar of leftist academia?

Is that how you reconcile the fact that Foucault is the bible of leftist academics? And has been since at least the 80's?

If you have nothing but "go away!" you lose the argument.

Foucault's ideology was sold out for progressive sexual liberation, who will deny it?

/lit/ has gone way uphill.

Just six months ago this place was a mess, a battleground between mindless Stirnerbots and Alt-right faggots in a brutal arms race to out edge each other.
its gotten nice and harmonic again since their mutually assured destruction
>>
>>9484089
>the leftists are better read

that reminds me, I see a lot less serious (or any) Murakami threads, which is a massive improvement. /lit/ without the leftists could actually finally organically evolve without this really new yorker style brand of mediocre international lit.

>but in general the leftists have always been better read
I've never - never - met a single leftist on here who could debate their position properly. At best it's "well I don't need to explain this, just go read xy and you will change your mind".
And half the time the big reading list is just an excuse because over the span of a century, leftists have claimed everything and its opposite so you're always able to pull the old "that's not real xy though.

I'm not saying people on the right are "better-read" but at least they'll argue an actual position and stand by it instead of arguing paper trails without ever making a stand.

Sorry for being triggered by yesterday's discussion with a Marxist who insisted social ownership has nothing to do with socialism AND JUST GO READ THE SOURCES

As for the the quality of /lit/, it's gotten more practical than intellectual but that's kind of okay because if you're here for a serious intellectual discussion, you're kind of wrong anyway. Just ban Pynchon fanboys though, that stuff is getting out of hand.

I miss the old Kanye, straight from the 'Go Kanye
Chop up the soul Kanye, set on his goals Kanye
I hate the new Kanye, the bad mood Kanye
The always rude Kanye, spaz in the news Kanye
I miss the sweet Kanye, chop up the beats Kanye
I gotta to say, at that time I'd like to meet Kanye
See I invented Kanye, it wasn't any Kanyes
And now I look and look around and there's so many Kanyes
I used to love Kanye, I used to love Kanye
I even had the pink Polo, I thought I was Kanye
What if Kanye made a song, about Kanye?

That's all it was Kanye, we still love Kanye

???

2004 fag here, 4chan was either democrat/misc. leftists or just a-political trolling for the longest time until /new/ hitler trolling triggered an actual exhumation and adaptation of 4channers moving into hard-right ideology

then 4ch mods/moot sold them up the river, and then they came back from that other site with a serious political ax

the gen X'rs/SA Goons that used to post here I assume killed themselves or left to reddit, and this is where we are now

This is that 100 post anon again.
Newfags, there is a poster who constantly creates really elaborate schemes to mess with people by getting them to feel sympathy for his character and then slowly dissolve into autism, it usually always begins with calling himself a genius (I've noticed this pattern) he used to joke about his 6 volume memoir or this time that he paid a publisher to publish his book and he scheduled a book signing at a barnes and noble where only his mom came and bought 3 copies of the book. He does this because he's admitted he has nothing else in life and gets some sort of pleasure out of it, anyway, he had me going for a little bit until I saw him descend into cunty autism but the nail in the coffin is this quote that he always uses when people ask to see his writing in these threads (because it's pretty good but it comes from an archived post from years ago back when warosu was up, someone else found that one out, he usually takes any written material from past critique threads but almost always this one):
>"Magnus realized, with a sort of laugh, that every joke he had recently heard had been told by himself, to himself, and at his own expense."
Anyway OP, you should really find something else to occupy your time if this is all you really have.

yeah i remember that faggot, has it really been that long? well, maybe part of the reason /lit/ is less leftists is because we've all grown up, back then i had just graduated college and was still in the academic marxist bubble, a good half decade in the real world will snap you out of your leftist faggotry, not to say i'm some alt-right goof, i'm just a standard liberal capitalist
>>
I've actually really enjoyed the particular /lit/ spin on 4chan's general rightward drift. As someone who went through a pretty hardcore college leftist/"FUCKING CONSERVATARDS" phase, the discovery of rigorous philosophy on the right-wing/traditionalist side has been enlightening and interesting.
>>

>>

people get some weird idea of what 4chan is by seeing screencaps and then come in and try to fit in, consequently harming the board; it is very annoying!

The 2014 tripfag bout was a recurrence of the 2009-10 plague. In those terrible years, there were some threads that had only tripfag posts. The most resilient of them was Butterfly, a namefag that dissapeared after being impersonated to death in 13'.

Also, lit/ has remained more or less the same for the last 8 years. There's a small number of intelligent people that make valuable contributions, a large number of autists that write funny posts, and the rest is shitposters/DFW-Pynchon fanboys.

The board swinged a bit to the right when pol/ became a popular board, but it quickly recovered. Christposters were the only real threat to lit/ in this decade.

So, from what I have read, old /lit/ was more DFW posting, more Stirner shit and less everything else? Is that it?

Umm, can't you guys go make a subreddit or discord for your boring meme-swaps instead of trying to drag down /lit/ when it has made strives to become a more varied and interesting place? You may be missing the feeling of belonging that you used to notice, because you certainly aren't welcome in /lit/ anymore.
>>
>>9492333
It just exists on all big boards. It's more of global-meme thing than just an epidemic on 4chan or a single board. You can't escape the insecure right-wingers and the triggered left. Read around it, I guess.
>>
>>9484068
>leftists have always been better read
Literature is about tradition ; it is about the great works of great individuals who shine light in the night of the worlds. It is not about making the condition of inferior beings somewhat better. Literature does not exist to please the mediocre. The leftist here is in foreign territory. The Sci-Fi and Fantasy threads might be dealing with left wing literature, but they don't belong here.
Left wing literature is mediocre because mediocrity is the goal of leftism, nothing else. Left wingers are mediocre. They are extremely rarely well-read.
You consider well-read those who have a mediocre knowledge of literature, because you compare them to those who have none at all ; the fact that you consider leftists to be well-read goes to show what you understand as "well-read" and how much of an uneducated subhuman piece of shit you are.
>>
>>9494493
BRAVO! The bigger brain wins out, once again :)
>>
>>9494477
Get the fuck out.

Seriously, get out. You don't seem to realize how /lit/ used to be great, before beasts like you ruined it. Now the mods side with the mediocre, with the rabble, with you ; they will ban anyone telling your kind to get the fuck out. They helped make this place more like reddit ; and it just keeps getting worse, as reddit users come, and just see the garbage, the retarded shit, the dumb sci-fi, fantasy, pleb threads, and go "woah this board is actually quite like reddit but with another template," so we have to deal with them, and they start to form sort of gangs, and will side against anything rare or noble to further wallow in their mediocrity like an animal in its shit. Most of them must be fat fucks, gamers and losers.
Some of them can be reared into respectable people, but they must encounter anons with unfathomable arrogance backed up by true knowledge of the subject matter. The good ones will feel terrible about themselves, and will remake themselves. They will read the good books, they will despise their former selves, and attempt to create a new personality, bringing about their maturity.
The others are just too low-blood to make it, probably the descendants of products of incest or the sludge of some peasant caste in a past age, the kind with big foreheads and squinted faces, who hunker through the streets and yell at anyone they deem "tryhard" or "hipster," words true for some but used falsely by them against anything or anyone remotely Olympian. These must be simply embarrassed with ad hominems, doxes, literary gang rape and dunce caps until they get the fuck out for good. That's all they can understand, so we speak their language.

Since we stopped doing this like we used to, the board now lacks the atmosphere of an old e/lit/e french salon fused with the violent Greek ἀγών which it once possessed.

We don't have experts to come in and shit on newplebs, tell them to go back to reading catcher in the rye: we've let people who fap off to DFW actually have threads and not shame them out of here, and the American election has made everyone care about petty politics more than the canon, so you get effete antifa wannabees and braindead alt-right meme-spouters bickering about who is more sophisticated when neither of them read anything written prior to the nineteenth century.

If we want the board to be good we have to shit on people all the time and cultivate a culture of elitism again.

In order to achieve this, we must make the reddit users feel not welcome, and ruin their chances at an actual discussion of whatever their mediocrity brought them to enjoy. They must lose all incentive to come here. This incentive is fundamentally that they find a platform which allows to partake in such discussion. This platform must be destroyed ; we must insult, humiliate and harass them until they can no longer find any pleasure in coming here.

In my opinion, it's places like deviantart and reddit that aren't good for writers. I can only guess why amateur writing hasn't been submitted years ago, don't care really, because I haven't been to /lit/ long enough.
But it looks like writers, who can shoulder worthless and belligerent criticism that is thrown at them under impunity, are showing up more which is good. I showed up at a good time.

I agree with you. I think the writer threads are indulgent of egomaniacal teens with the desires to be a Writer rather than actually write... but that's petty to use as an excuse to shit on what are probably only healthy threads in the long-run.

Scrolling past those threads and catching a glimpse of some basement-dwellers by-the-numbers bitter poem about basement life is as cringey here as it would be anywhere, and so why not have writer threads I suppose.

It's about working with and within tradition. Except for people like Tao Lin and dumb millenial "writers", every author up to the 80s worked within the framework of tradition. You can twist it, turn it upside down, work against it, but you're still working with or within tradition. You can't just ignore it and act like it never happened, which is what young authors today are doing.
Hell, the form of Bret Easton Ellis' narration is taken straight from Flaubert.
>>
>>9497691
It's easy to look back and talk about all the codified literature of the past as belonging to a monolithic tradition, but at the time they were breaking with tradition. One example of using an old technique in new ways does not define an entire generation of writers.

Nice try. You are just mad that we actually read and don't meme about shit we read nothing about.

I think this "genre shit" meme came about because the few of you who actually read, ripped apart the pseuds when they pretended to be well versed on a topic. This gave you a sense of power, of accomplishment.
Now when it comes to genre fiction, you are the pseuds, you are the ones being ripped apart, and because the books we read aren't meme'd to hell and back, you have to actually read the books. On the count of no wiki and sparknotes to help you pretend as if you read.

tl;dr sffg actually reads and you guys feel shame for it.

>s/this/that/g is a regular expression for find and replace
No, it isn't.

It's the command syntax used by various traditional Unix tools (ed, ex/vi, sed) for doing a find-and-replace operation on a certain portion of a text buffer.

The "s" stands for "substitute". The part between the first and second slash is a regular expression by which the tool searches the text; the part between the second and third slash is the substitution for the text that was found.

The third slash is optional in some tools, but one can add additional modifiers to the command if one uses it. In this case for instance, the "g" stands for "global" which means the tool won't just replace the first occurrence of the regular expression it finds, and instead keep searching until the end of the text portion to which the command applies (typically, the current line).

In my opinion, /lit/ will always be plagued by ideological divides. Between the beret wearing, 5'7", high school girl fucking lib-pseuds and the frog spewing, cuck declaring, internet-alpha-wannabes, the redditors and the pollacks, the newfags and the oldfags, these divides strive to lump individuals into an us vs. them mentality.

Maybe I'm the faggot and these divides are inherent in the nature of the board and it's discussion. But at the same time, I continue to browse /lit/ because there are great discussions and great ideas in a middle ground that are presented in an apolitical way that almost always end up accomplishing a positive discussion.

The /lit/ users I appreciate are the ones who could careless about your major in university, the number of reads on your Goodreads account, your political leanings or your bullshit patrcianship, they're only here to drink way too much soda, procrastinate in their lives and talk about books that interest them. New /lit/, old /lit/, future /lit/, through all periods this board will endure, I'm just thankful there are some of you here that make the discussions on /lit/ better than most other places on the internet.

These girls have daddy issues and want their men to be tall and strong as if they were their daddies, and when it comes to sex, they will be much taller than her, reminding her how daddy used to come in her bed every night.

Ignore the height memes, they are just enabling mentally ill girls with daddy issues to live openly with their Stockholm syndrome. They liked when daddy diddled them as a kid, now as an adult they want to continue experiencing it.

Kys my man.
>>
Old thread but I just want to vent since it does bother me how /lit/ and most 4chan is infested with this shit.

I blame the creation of the donald reddit subreddits which is tied to /pol/.
My problem is not the stance they take, their ideologies, or whatever. This is not about that.
It's simply the influx of new users, 4chan did see a growth in users since last year, beyond the common inflation the site usually had.
I also don't blame only new users but old users who felt rejuvenated through /pol/ style shitposting and new culture.

Remember when /v/ had their freakout over the feminists and problems with gaming journalism? Thanks to that shit being tied strongly with the respective subreddits, we had an influx of new users and a new culture of blaming this new evil thing in every discussion about anything.
Thanks to that shit, we began to have dumbasses trying to change the flow of every discussion towards their petty problems. Instead of having people troll here about DFW or whatever, we got people desperately looking for dumb shit to blame on sjws or whatever their jews are.
Mixed with that, last year happened, so now we got all these new users or brainwashed (into adopting this new culture) old users. The sjw boogieman be it real or not is now amplified in discussions and add to that shit like the typical american bipartisan/binary kind of thinking about every subject.
So now we have people making serious threads about rupi kaur or whatever and taking it very seriously. Before it would be something like "holy shit she sucks balls" and we would move to another "DFW is a meme" or "Pynchon posts on 4chan" thread. Instead, now we have stuff like "destruction of the western white canon", "winning" arguments, "redpill me on", "feed me more nazi fanfiction", etc.
Less and less users have read at least one book from the meme trio, less users are college age or older, less users have at least undergrad levels, etc.

How come nobody knows how to write anymore? Look at this asshole and how he has a line break after every God damn sentence. Is this Common core? Is this something that kids are being taught to do now?

lmao fucking wrecked

I'm neither american nor have been through that shit, sorry you guys have that awful method. Line break is common courtesy, or at least it was in 4chan because of how the page is displayed, it's usually more comfortable (for those without appchan/xchan or whatever) to have short sentences so as to keep the shit more compact.
It could also be
just a stylistic
choice.

Yeah you're a regular Cormac McCarthy. Go fuck yourself and your shit grammar.
