Where do I start with Hesse?
Siddhartha looks good, but I've heard it's hard to stomach if you're not familiar with his writing style.
No, Siddhartha is a perfectly palatable book. In fact, it's a great book. Couldn't recommend it enough.

This is my past exactly if you replace "enough" with "though".

siddhartha is great but it is simply written. Don't go into expecting linguistic loop-de-loops. Its power is in its simplicity and story. Though if you're already very familiar with the story of the buddha it may bore you throughout.
I really enjoyed Steppenwolf

Saying more:
Steppenwolf has more formal experimentation, the thread of the narrative is not as easy to follow - it is dreamy and indistinct in areas - hallucinatory and excessive, and in other sections it condenses into a sober concreteness.
It contains one of my favorite ever descriptions of the soul
I think steppenwolf has a strong appeal for imageboard users, especially /lit/ browsers, but the ending will ruin you if you are not ready for it.
don't bother, he just recaps Jung
