Autismo, Lord of Colorectal Nightmares

He's still a fucking Marxist. Angry counter-neo-neo-hey-guys-no-you-have-to-listen Marxist. Still fucking up the universe as per usual. Baudrillard without the Gallic verve, or the empathy. More amphetamines, less literary flair, and less women. Deleuze without the actual emancipatory spirit of hope. A patron saint of passivity, burnout, anger and dread. A ghoul feasting on the bones of dead revolutionaries.

In short, a man of the time and the philosopher we deserve.

He started as a Marxist, switched to studying "cybernetic culture", took a huge amount of meth, and now thinks a bunch of autonomous city-states would be a good idea. Also thinks a combination of accelerating capitalism and AI developments will bring about some sort of malevolent posthuman god called Gnon. Big Sinophile.

See I think you were trying to put me off writing that but if anything I'm more interested.

>See I think you were trying to put me off
Wouldn't dream of it. I don't really agree with him on much, but he's a fascinating character - would recommend trying the fiction stories Phyl Undhu and Chasm, which express some of his ideas in a more digestible horror-story form before taking the plunge on Fanged Noumena, though. The prose on his essays can be pretty impenetrable in places.
>>
>>9479027
I've developed strange mixed feeling about Marxian ideas, and I haven't worked it all out yet. I believe in natural hierarchies, and despise the egalitarian conceit of Marxists, but I think Marxism persists, despite have no surviving predictive capacity, because modernity cannot be undone. There's not going back, and people all perceive the impossibility of arranging human civilization on immaterial precepts ever again.

Marxism doesn't offer a viable solution, but it has still right about the problem of modernity. Why the fuck did Nietzsche have to die before finishing his work?
>>
>>9479057
what the fuck was going on with phyl-undhu. It seemed so disjointed. If the second half in the sim was the whole story I might have enjoyed it more but I felt like there was a puzzle I was supposed to put together but didn't. I assume the sim was the great filter? Was it an accurate sim of the future? Is it somehow connected to the AI-God/Land's self-insert? Why did it end so abruptly?
>>
>>9479058
To be clear, he's no longer a Marxist - he seems to think the human species as we know it is essentially finished, with no point in anything but accelerationism.
>>
>>9479091
Oh, I know he's not a Marxist, but I actual think his early Marxism positively informed his view of humanity. Imagine stripping Marxism of it's blank slate humanity, an dialectical materialism. Yes, it'd no longer Marxism, but you still have a modernist sensibility that sees the the inability of immaterially defined moral imperatives to shape civilization after the Death of God. Maybe the answer is to allow the evolution Burko-Darwinian social systems that can take the place of our current civilization, but I fear that is going to require of few more decades of post-modern pseudochristian Progressive society that will probably result in millions dead, and considerable dysgenic population trends before it exhausts itself like a last gasp of the old moral order of the west from which it descends.

Maybe Land's Sinophilia comes from admiring a society that was never built on monotheistic certainties, and that thus seems to require fewer convulsions and cultural spasms to fit itself into modernity.

Maybe the west was destined to die.

This is the uncomfortable shit that Land forces me to think about.
>>
>>9479169
The West is a big Jesus, and its civilization is a form that is to become 'completed' for the post-formal, post-inform to function properly. Art has been doing it since the Renaissance. It's literally our destiny; a hyperstition from the Italian city states through to the final realization of the Hegelian project. The Situationists knew. We embody the image of sin so we can be judged by ourselves on the cross, and when we are killed and buried by the flesh that has defined us since the fall of the first man, we can rise again to complete the redemption of all humanity. Letting that flesh go is the hard part.

Me and Nick land are among the few individuals to fully understand the implications of Deleuzean thought and achieve the BwO. It is no coincidence that we both went insane soon after. Six visits to the psych ward later after deterritorializing myself with hardcore psychedelics, I have now returned to the fold of Platonism. The ethics of difference, it would seem, end only in a padded cell or a coffin. For my mother's sake, I now adhere to virtue ethics. But anyways I kind of agree that Deleuzian thought is limited and obviously not really good for a person. And yes, Land is definitely actually following through on its logic. Deleuzian thought if actually followed through on is not this nice thing that cares about anything or anyone, it absolutely everything asunder, including of course any kind of politics of equality or charity.

wew, he's certainly better at writing than lecturing. It takes him a while to get rolling, you have to sit through 5 minutes of "In this course, we will be looking at two different things... and I won't be discussing what we discussed last session any more than I need to.... Now last session, and I apologize for repeating this, we talked about modernity and its key inventions, we could actually consume the entire course in this subject, but I'm only going to...."

Kind of a far cry from the stories of his lectures at warwick.

There are specific mechanisms in society that increase power hierarchies and enable things like state escalation to exist, if we are to ever curtail their formation it would require dispersed and concurrent anti-authoritarian egregores

>>9479091
accelerationism is pretty Marxist though, it still maintains a notion of development in a holistic historical context: capitalism sets the preconditions for communism, not socialist/fascist attempts at curtailing its negative effects through formalist state regulation.

>>9479190
I like this take
>>
>>9478600
He's not a Marxist though
>>
>>9482848
This is from fanged noumena, it's got some strong marxist overtones- exploitation, capitalism as unsustainable, etc.

Of course, he's absolutely right. And while Land isn't a Marxist, neither are the rest of the post-structuralists that the frog posters like to accuse of marxism.

So I say we continue to spread the idea that Land is a Marxist, if only to confused the froggos
>>

>>
>>9482887

>>
>>9482984
Read >>9482887

I can't imagine many Froggos appreciating this kind of thinking. Nick Land isn't a typical leftist, but he's certainly not the right-wing reactionary many make him out to be.
>>
>>9482984

He's not a Marxist in the sense of someone who supports Marxism, certainly, but he does derive a lot from it...and which Conty doesn't anyways. Like it or not, Marx was a filthy bookworm and writing-a-lot was his third name, he's basically the ultimate meme bomb of non-analytical philosophy.
>>
>>9482994

Thing is, the alt-righties believe society can still be salvaged as is and seek some kind of return to older values. Dark Enlightment does not propose that at all, and Nick's Leviathan is much more of an accelerationist type, taking Capitalism on its back right to the bitter end. That's not properly Marxist, but as you said, the alt-right as /pol/ and mainstream populists portray it certainly would not enjoy the actual Neo-reactionary movement.

>>9483030

Or restarting the cycle to try again better this time?
>>
>>9482994
>but he's certainly not the right-wing reactionary many make him out to be

Not right-wing in a simplistic, ordinary way, but he's extremely reactionary and even regularly posts up stuff about race and IQ.

Similarly to myself he has no problem taking what he likes from any side, so there's a bit of Deleuze in there and there's some Moldbug in there. Honestly I just like to read all the far out shit I can find so I'll read him, but personally I think Land is beyond the pale morals-wise. He basically just wants technology and capitalism to take over and eventually replace humanity, and not for any supposed ecological or 'progressive' reasons, but just because he's fucking weird and cold. He also thinks that high IQ elites should and will close themselves away in fortress enclaves while the lower IQ people (non-whites and non-asians) are left to their own devices and to starve. He underestimates the how central charity is to western values of course, but obviously things are going to be quite bad in the coming decades. Any retarded modernist / Enlightenment dreams of "progress" in any egalitarian sense are fucking done forever.
>>
>>9483421
There is no telos because nobody knows.

For example, the way genetic engineering can redesign our very species is unprecedented. There are no great philosophical or religious texts that we can turn to in order to interpret such innovations, and derive practical advice from.

Even popsci guys like Michio Kaku will tell you that technology waits for no one, and doesn't ask for permission to intrude into our lives and change everything.

Land does have a vision for what he believes will or should happen, but it's nothing pretty, see: >>9483515

>“The great educational value of the war against Christendom lies in the absolute truthlessness of the priest. Such purity is rare enough. The 'man of God' is entirely incapable of honesty, and only arises at the point where truth is defaced beyond all legibility. Lies are his entire metabolism, the air he breathes, his bread and his wine. He cannot comment upon the weather without a secret agenda of deceit. No word, gesture, or perception is slight enough to escape his extravagant reflex of falsification, and of the lies in circulation he will instinctively seize on the grossest, the most obscene and oppressive travesty. Any proposition passing the lips of a priest is necessarily totally false, excepting only insidiouses whose message is momentarily misunderstood. It is impossible to deny him without discovering some buried fragment or reality.”

Holy shit, Nick Land is a /b/-edgelord become academic:

"There is only one sane and healthy relation to Christianity; perfect indifference. Mine is not of that kind. My detestation for the Christian faith exhaustst my being, and more. I long for its God to exist, in order to slake myself as violence upon him. If there are torments coming to me, I want them; all of them; God experimenting in cruelty upon me. I want no lethargy in Hell, rather vigour and imagination. Oh yes, it is all very wretched, and if I am grateful to Christianity it is for one thing alone; it has tought me how to HATE.
[..]
I have not been a theist for a single second of my life. In my first assemblies at primary school, when the theist idiocy was first wheeled out, I remember thinking: it is natural that adults should lie to you, but is it really necessary for them to insult the intelligence quite this much? As for the longing to believe, nothing could be more alien to me, because nothing is more obvious than the fact that humanity--far from being a creation-- is a disease. Why should the absence of a divinity analogical to mankind be more disturbing than the absence of a giant tortoise supporting the world on its back?

He's so intensely autistic and edgy that I guess this is the only reason Dark Enlightnment never caught up on mainstream philosophy. It's actually surprising how much scrutiny it endures from the other speculative (and also much less edgy) philosophers like Brassier.

I guess people are going by the Dark Enlightnment chart like it or not with all the genetic engineering and advanced AI research going into the heart of our biggest companies. But god is he edgy, can't wait for someone more down to earth to buy into his ideas and make something out of it.
