How to understand surreal/abstract literature?

How does that help with understanding? I can already immerse myself in it, that's not the problem
>implying it needs to be "understood."
It ain't a fucking jigsaw puzzle where all the pieces snap into place.

Look at André Breton's prose, for example. You might notice that the grammar and syntax are always proper, nothing strange is happening there to challenge understanding. But the sentences are connecting words that would not have been brought together this way by conventional thought. That's what surrealism is about: unlikely meetings. So, in the case of surrealist literature, my advice would be to pay close attention to semantic play.

pretend to understand it
approach it like you would a dream

Read "The Lost Ones" by Samuel Beckett. Pretty good entry to abstract lit. The prose is dense, but the "narrative" is still pretty accessible.
