Because I could recognize the feelings many characters had throughout the book in my own life; and because, while I could sympathize with Wyatt, I know I can't empathize with him. I can't feel the same way he does though I despair. I have felt the loss of my mother, the abandon of my father, searched for God, lost my way, then found a small place where I could live with purpose and then saw it dashed against the rocks. It's terrifying to know my life's been inscribed in another's imagination, in the nightmare of history.
