I travel about 3 miles on foot to my usual. Book prices are a far cry from what they were a decade ago, but it's better than RRP.

In my experience, the best purchases are from dusty book hovels. The most valuable books are either marked at $20 due to their good cond, or they're found in a pile in the back. Often times the 'required reading' can be picked up for $2-$5 because it's an older edition, printed in hardcover with a sleeve. The sleeve is usually fucked or entirely missing, and it isn't uncommon to find the foreword and acknowledgements have been torn out.

If you're trying to be patrician, sure this isn't the method for you- but if you're after the knowledge and are on a budget, aside from stealing from public libraries, this is a good go-to.
