>read a lot about how p&v are shitheads
Do you mean the anti-semitism they added?
>>9431433
oh shit really? that is super fucked

Ignat Avsey if you're from an Anglo country. P&V for everyone else.

McDuff. In trying to be faithful to the original text P&V often end up with clumsy phrasing. Though I still prefer them to Avsey.

Ya it doesn't even fit with the time setting because a few characters mention oven-dodgers and "there weren't even 6 million jews in Germany".

I think it's worth noting that Dostoyevsky is known in Russia to have awkward prose, so P&V's awkwardness is more due to accuracy, rather than awkward literalness as you might find in a translation like Nabokov's of Lolita into Russia (for example).

Avsey
/lit/ has a new favorite translator every other month, just go for whatever's available. I once saw a picture showing the same paragraph by 4 different translators, if you really want to make the right decision.

I can't recommend MacAndrew enough, although Avsey and McDuff are also good. Avsey is notably British.
Also there's a Garnett translation revised and edited by Macreynolds and also by Oddo that supposed to be great.
P&V are stilted garbage, which is really unfortunate because I love their everyman's edition covers.

Garnett is my favorite. I don't care about the plebs who argue about it at length. Look at a few comparisons, whichever flavor is the best to you, that's the one you should read.
Anyone read the pic related edition? Never hear McReynolds brought up in translation debates, but Norton Critical is usually pretty good.
>>9433323
Norton Critical Edition is dope. It gives so much historical context in the footnotes. I can't imagine reading BK without those.

>Book cover is a random cropped painting
Why is this allowed?
There wasn't even a lake in TBK was there?

That Op image intrigued me.
Swetlana Geier by far.
Just learn Russian, fags. Pleasure of reading in original language worth all struggles learning it. There are a lot of high quality literature in rus so why don't you give a try and learn it?
>>9434096
Because it takes years to learn Russian to a level where you can actually appreciate authors like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky.
