ninefox looks like trash
closed and common could be good
obelisk gate and birds in the sky got no idea

honestly its between Death's End and Too Like the Lightning.
Personally altho Death's Head was amazing not sure another book in a trilogy needs to be another Best Novel Winner.

I tried reading Moorcock's Elric of Melnibone and found it unpalatable. The prose was so staid and impersonal, it was a struggle to hold interest each new page.

I used to read these but I never donated. I do have a hilarious story though. I was reading a chapter and I glanced through the comments where they were complaining about their subreddit. So I went there and it was actually worth it. Anyway here's the story
>Some guys notice how popular Chinese novels are becoming
>They make their own novel but they call it a chinese novel

>Their fake novel gets really popular until some guy notices that the raws are fake and the author didn't exist

I read Robert Silverberg's 1989 novel At Winter's End, a remarkable book of fantasy. A tribe of furry bipeds with extra sensory tails emerge from their hillside cocoon habitat after a 700,000 year ice age. They journey to a fabled ancient city of wise Lizardmen where they seek to establish a civilisation, and enact God-appointed dominion over a newly thawed Earth.

In 500 pages Silverberg asks what is human, what is civilisation, and examines the requirements of leadership. But this book is also about the loves, friendship, growth, ambitions, and rivalries of a tightly knit tribe as they negotiate an unknown outside world, where previously held ways are confronted. In this way, the book is a mix of lengthy worldbuilding, lore, earthy characters, and insights of an anthropological nature. It also has extensive lesbian scenes of women who are not entirely catlike, but who are furry and have long tails. 5/5
>>
>>9422646
Whale Road
>>
>>9424033
Nah, /sffg/ is every bit as elitist as outer /lit/ but with way lower standards for what they're willing to read. Still have the pseuds who talk about books they haven't read, still have people looking down on others for their tastes, still have people mindlessly regurgitating memes in lieu of actual discussion. I only come here cause I happen to read a couple authors/series that get talked about frequently in these threads, but if you don't happen to like one of those authors or series /sffg/ is a super shitty place to talk about fantasy or sci-fi.
>>
>>9424047
>It also has extensive lesbian scenes of women who are not entirely catlike, but who are furry and have long tails.
Why does every Silverberg novel have a minimum of one sex scene?
>>
>>9424060
Because he's long in the habit. He wrote porn novels in the 50s/60s under a pseudonym. He's way more explicit in his New Age sci-fi from the 70s.
>>
>>9424088
>He wrote porn novels in the 50s/60s under a pseudonym.
Even without any sort of evidence I instantly believe you.
>>
>>9423965
I've seen that meme but sadly it doesn't really help me my dude
>>
>>9424094
Honestly, Silverberg approaches and depicts sex in the best way I have seen in SF+F. It's all part of character building, and it admits how tawdry and zesty the whole enterprise is.

Writers will have scenes of explicit violence and mutilation, but put sex behind the door or curtain - to me this is somewhat 2-dimensional.

But it's a tricky thing to do, I find GRRM cringeworthy here.
>>
>>9424155
While I generally agree that sex is a perfectly valid element to be used in storytelling and Silverberg generally uses it effectively in his stories, there are a few cases where I think he's just whacking off. Here I'm thinking specifically of Roma Eterna.

There's a recussing motif in A Time Of Changes about how the protag is a premature ejaculator. The exuberance and bad taste of the New Wave SF era is sort of why I like it. If people want to read a story about a telepath (Dying Earth), why not depict him entering a woman's mind while she has sex? Why not have a cult (Book Of Skulls) whose initiation rites include joyless tantric sex with exotic ladies?

I'd argue Goodkind is THE worst, even beyond the Gor guy - at least he knew he was writing wankrags, Goodkind has this pretension of being great myth or something despite every book having multiple "and then Kahlan was threatened with rape, and the villain described exactly how he would rape her, with a lot of adjectives and shouting" scenes.
>>

There's also Goodkind's number one fan Newcomb

>>
>>9424749
The trick is simple, you get over yourself and do it. Stop acting like you wont be making edits along the way.
>>
>>9424765

Just stop thinking about it. Focus on just doing instead of any magical ideas of perfection. If you feel your work is shitty then actually sit down to figure out how you can make it better. Anything else is idiocy.
>>
>>9424749
>>9424766
Just sit down and write and edit later. Free writing can help with blocks. Open up a document, and start typing whatever comes to mind about it, coherency be damned. Maybe you'll hit a stride and realize what the next step is. Getting too obsessed with making it perfect before it's even on paper at all will ensure it's never started.

Nightwings is still the best work I've read from him. It reads a lot more like his more reflective later work. It's also like a more simply told and elegiac Jack Vance story, not only in its Dying Earth sort of setting but also in its rigidly structured society of guilds and their customs.

I notice it was paired with Vance's The Last Castle in one of those Tor doubles, in what would have been a very appealing sight on the wire racks in the 1980's.

Any of Lovecraft's Penguin volumes (people seem to think Lovecraft must be read in a certain order; not true.) There are also books collecting CL Moore's two Weird Tales character serials, of Jirel (dimension traveling female Conan) and Northwest Smith (sci-fi smuggler/space opera). Leigh Brackett has Mars stories collected in some older print books. Of course, there is a lot of collected Robert Howard out there, Conan and also his considerable non-Conan Weird Tales. If you want Golden Age SF, Mammoth Books did a volume of these with a bunch of John Campbell authors.

The chances are if they wrote for Weird Tales and are still in at least recent print, they are worth a look.

Pretty sure it was mentioned in DoD.

Night of Knives was a heavy read, but kinda cool considering the setting.
Return of the Crimson Guard was quite good, and the convergence had lots of shit happening. Easier to read than NoK.
Stonewielder felt like a small step down from RotCG, but was still a good read. The Greymane and Ruthan Gudd relation isn't fleshed out tho, but we get to see life at the Wall.
I'm about to start Orb Sceptre Throne, as I finished TCG last week.

I think it naturally lends itself to military space operas like:

Ender's Game (a disappointment in my opinion because the military strategies were literally shit) → very simple prose

Thrawn from Star Wars (I enjoyed it because the strategies were quite creative) → very simple prose

Ninefox Gambit (I enjoyed it because of the great/alien worldbuilding and Hexarchate mysteries but this author can't write military strategies to save their fucking life) → prose starts off very dense and tapers down to more manageable levels but it's denser than Peter Watts at his most verbose

Hyperion Cantos. I had very few good things to say about the Endymion parts which is most Space Opera but one of those was Frederico De Soya, captain of the Raphael. The Hyperion parts are not 1:1 in any way to LOGH but are thoroughly enjoyable and has some of the most stunning worldbuilding and most moving scenes in fiction without having jargon.

Firefall by Peter Watts. This is much more exploration/mystery based than military based.

So apparently Eliza Dushku wants to be The Lady and got David Goyer on board as producer.

http://deadline.com/2017/04/eliza-dushku-star-the-black-company-series-adaptation-david-goyer-im-global-1202076367/

>Boston Diva Prods. optioned the ten-book epic action fantasy series, as well as the forthcoming book, Port of Shadows, which falls between Book 1 and 2 in the series and will be published by Tor Books in 2018. Dushku (Bull, Dollhouse, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) will star in the pivotal role of the dark sorceress, The Lady.

>The series follows the exploits of the Black Company, an elite mercenary unit that carries out the often nefarious deeds of the highest bidder across a Tolkeinesque landscape. When these hard-bitten men discover the prophecy that the embodiment of good has been reborn, they must re-examine their loyalties. The Lady (Dushku), who rules over the Northern Empire, uses the Black Company to further her domination of a power structure rife with usurpers. Additional casting will be announced in the coming weeks.

>Goyer (Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, Starz’s Da Vinci’s Demons, ABC’s Flash Forward) will executive produce under his first-look deal with IM Global TV, along with Kevin Turen (Birth of a Nation, All Is Lost, Arbitrage). Also on board as executive producers through Boston Diva are Dushku, Nate Dushku, and Ami Lourie, along with Sam Maydew (John Leguizamo’s Ghetto Klown) of Silver Lining Entertainment.

>“Glen Cook’s books turn the traditional fantasy adventure tropes on their ear with wry, dimensional characters and a modern sensibility,” said IM Global Television President Mark Stern. “We’re excited to explore this intricate and exciting world for television with David and Kevin along with Eliza, Nate, Ami and Sam.”

>“The Black Company is vast in scope yet remains fundamentally relevant through the morally ambiguous choices it presents at every turn,” added Dushku. “We are excited to bring Glen Cook’s classic story to life with Mark and David, luminaries in the cinematic pursuit of science fiction and epic fantasy, who will inevitably assemble poignant characters embroiled in jaw-dropping action.”

The young emerging writers of that time had to write a wide variety of material to get by
Harlan Ellison wrote for what were known as 'the sweats magazines' which were magazines for men with a lot of sex and action and military exploits, and detective magazines and all that, he's republished some of that recently

There were a series of big hardcover reprints of pulp fiction stories a few years ago. I can't remember the name or the editor sorry.

For specific authors, Gollancz has been reprinted rare out of print SF writers in their SF Gateway series some of them are from the pulp era
Their fantasy and sf masterworks line included the combined works of C.L. Moore and an collection of Leigh Brackett and Clarke Ashton Smith
Robert E Howard and HP Lovecraft are kept in print

Finished this today

Pretty cool how he describes the sea level raising pulses of the 2060s and 2100s

The economic collapses and bail outs of the banks repeating 2008
The austerity this demanded
Cut back or privatisation of services this resulted in
The migration from low lying regions, the conflicts, the famines and droughts

The technologies deployed to try to decarbonise

People in the intertidal adapting buildings to live in them, the story is set in the MetLife skyscraper converted into apartments for 2000 people, many have just closer sized rooms or have to live communally

Give me some post-singularity sci-fi like Quantum Thief series.
I've already read Watts and think that his version that the humanity is fucked regardless of technological singularity is more realistic. But still.

I haven't read a book in like 10 years. I'm after something in the fantasy range but I have 0 clue about books. I was thinking of seeing if the bookstore had The Silmarillion since that's honestly the only fantasy type book I know of.

I guess I'm asking for recommendations here because I looked at your images but I still have no clue what they are about.

>>9430657
When they over explain everything so "no man is left behind". Prime examples of this are Sanderson and female urban fantasy writers.

Although with the female urban fantasy writers it makes sense. Their fanbase is mostly women who might not take the time to find out what a phrase means, or what an internet slang means, so the author explains it all. Sometimes it's beautifully done, sometimes it's fucking annoying.

Malazan just drops you in the middle of the world. Like that movie with tom cruise and the mech body and time loop. You have to nearly complete book one to get an understanding and a sense of what's going on.

Overall worth it but one of the MCs comes close to torpedoing the whole thing.

With hindsight I'd have preferred a more focused and less epic narrative focusing on the Ketteral and their doings.

best bit of three body though was that it was at the core a basic alien invasion story told right
