Just because it's satire it doesn't mean it can't reflect reality.
Or do you mean to say that you genuinely not perceive the book as satirical?I can't exclude this possibility because I've actually had a similar experience.
When I was in high school I read Kafka and Gogol and believed their work was satirical but as I grew older and my autism deepened I realized they were 100% serious.
