Is the series worth getting through? Read Gardens of the Moon, didn't like it that much, but I've read that it gets much better by the second book

Reading book 1 actually broke me free from the genre trash spell. It committed its sins so unabashedly that I finally took notice of them, and I have never been able to read another fantasy book without being conscious of all the masturbation and cookie cutting. So thanks, Malazan.
