What is esstential...socialist(?)....reading?

The world is turning to shit and the left has been hijacked by identity politics and rich kids playing revolutionist.

I want to know more about socialism and it's roots, and what a workable system looks like. I also want to know what exactly neoliberalism is, since it's apparently something that has disguised itself as left wing or something.
>>
Probably start by reading Marx's 'The Communist Manifesto'.
>>
start with 'wage labour and capital' and 'critique of the gotha programme'

better to ignore him altogether and just start with Kant and Hegel then onto Kierkegaard and Nietzsche instead.

I think it is, but it's not as central as most people imagine. I think a good short intro to Marx would be 1. Engels - Socialism: Utopian and Scientific, 2. Marx - Wage Labor and Capital, 3. The Manifesto

after that you'll know if you want to dig deeper or change course

Charles Fourier was an early 19th century utopian socialist, predecessor of the french ultraleft tradition. Marx thought he was almost as important as Hegel, also influenced Deleuze and some of the situationists. Fourier was fond of satire and hyperbole, but also a serious utopian thinker, He even wrote a book on the hierarchy of cuckolds, classifying the different varieties of cucks. Fourier's also a recurrring character on Walter Benjamin's Arcades Project.

"The New Way of the World: On Neoliberal Society" is the best overview of neoliberalism you're probably going to find.

If you're interested in historic social movements try reading Kenneth Rexroth's Communalism: From Its Origins to the Twentieth Century

If you're a pedant, G.D.H. Cole wrote five volumes on the history of socialism (from 1789-1939):

Barely, but it's starting to come back. The book explains why. There were a fair number of socialists, including parties and politicians, up until the 1930s. The liberal capitalists masterfully co-opted the language of socialism while stripping the ideas of any semblance of economic justice/class consciousness.

that's why they're the ruling class and the proletariat isn't

that was marx's dumbest idea, that the workers are going to become the ruling class, lollll
>>
>>9389938
Weeeew, lad
>>
>>9389990
>The liberal capitalists masterfully co-opted the language of socialism

Of course they did. Socialism/Marxism is perfectly co-optable by the middle-class trash who are resentful that they aren't the ruling class.
>>
>>9390135
True Socialism seeks to unite the whole of the nation whereas Marxism seeks only to divide the people of a nation into groups (proletariat and bourgeoisie obviously).

This is the capitalistic nature of Marxism which usually flies over the heads of all Marx advocates. Capitalism divides individuals, declares winners and losers, and the division continues exponentially. It is a constant battle between people,it is a system that thrives on conflict. The only difference with Marxism is that it is slightly more collectivist and simply flips the roles of winners and losers (this is why it is always doomed to fail, as the proletariat will NEVER be fit to run themselves) but the same us vs them mentality is there.

In true Socialism, the proletariat and bourgeoisie work together to further both their interests which are actually the same.
>>
>>9390174
>Of course they did. Socialism/Marxism is perfectly co-optable by the middle-class trash who are resentful that they aren't the ruling class.

there are some good leftwingers who criticise certain aspects of marxism, either way, you have to grapple with his influence, even if you are a right winger.

>It is well-known that an automaton once existed, which was so constructed that it could counter any move of a chess-player with a counter-move, and thereby assure itself of victory in the match. A puppet in Turkish attire, water-pipe in mouth, sat before the chessboard, which rested on a broad table. Through a system of mirrors, the illusion was created that this table was transparent from all sides. In truth, a hunchbacked dwarf who was a master chess-player sat inside, controlling the hands of the puppet with strings. One can envision a corresponding object to this apparatus in philosophy. The puppet called “historical materialism” is always supposed to win. It can do this with no further ado against any opponent, so long as it employs the services of theology, which as everyone knows is small and ugly and must be kept out of sight.

>ever working in unison

Please. Workers fall into multiple broad categories:

Sycophants, workhorses, ladderclimbers, innovators, unionists, cronyists, and most of all, apathetic paycheckers.

To expect those disparate groups to come together for some imagined common interest is naive.

ideology of any sort requires force and power mongering to implement. And the ideology is always flawed, and the success is always dependent upon silencing and fucking over nonconsenting groups.

This is ideology.

This except ignore the post modern sophistry, especially zizek and his crowd. Also, imo guy debord is pretty useless """"theory"""" as well. Look into more Friere, and Dewey as far as education goes, look into herman and chomsky's media analysis like the political economy of the mass media, and manufacturing consent. Also, learn to understand that state socialism is the opposite of socialism. Socialism means workers control their work, and thus the economy, period. If that isn't present than it's state or corporate tyranny.

Have a blast: https://edensauvage.wordpress.com/2016/07/25/reading-list-for-aspiring-ultra-lefts/

However, this being /lit/ and all, I think there's value in looking beyond Marxism as a self-contained tradition. Once you got the basics down, you should take a look at neo-Marxist and post-Marxists like the structuralists, Deleuzians, or the Slovenian School.

A great intro is the first Idea of Communism (Zizek, Badiou, etc), if you want to get a grasp of communism from a more contemporary philosophical position.

the reason 4chan and many other websites have taken a swing to the right over the past ~5 years is precisely because they've been exposed to left wing thought

the best thing most leftists could do for leftism would be to shut up forever, but this will never happen since the movement's political elements are secondary to its existence as a source of social capital, and as long as it continues to be something people use to identify themselves as morally superior, it will continue to attract the sort of person who wants to be seen as morally superior, who in turn will alienate everyone else, sort of like vegetarianism-lite

when you bring this up to individual leftists and point out how none of their contributions help and may even do more harm than good you always get them to a point where they will say some variation of:

>but if i'm silent in the face of oppression, i'm complicit in that oppression

which is entirely true, but betrays a great deal of narcissism in the speaker. specifically, why do they think *their* contributions will help? most leftists alienate people, the past 5 years of political discourse and maneuvering are absolutely evidence of this. in most cases "speaking up" does more harm than remaining silent, but since the individual leftists can't handle their own guilt, they make society deal with it instead, and after ~5 years of this you get told to fuck off in the form of trump

it's not that they want to alienate people, they don't, it's that they want to the social capital and therapeutic elements more
>>
>>9393964
>it's that they want to the social capital and therapeutic elements more

I'm somewhat sure that comes from mostly the rich kids (and all the smug media personalities who want to remind you how progressive they are while looking down at you) They for some reason are the loudest.

Kind of why I'm also interested in what neoliberalism is since it seems to have all the trappings of progressivism while being pro-corporate.

It's not any widely accepted name, but besides that or "Ljubljana School" I really haven't seen anything better.

It'd describe it as the collective name for the Lacan + German Idealism sphere of Žižek, Mladen Dolar, Samo Tomšič, Alenka Zupančič etc, as well as a few non-Slovenians like Adrian Johnston or Geoff Pfeifer.

Some would describe it as "Zizekianism", but I really don't want to paint Slavoj as the alpha and omega of this group.

Movements require identities.

And the most important identity - the people that work capital (rather than the people that own capital) is suppressed.

People's are forced to identity with sport teams, corporate brands, flags, etc. All that are unimportant and are used to make money off of you.

Socialism is dead.
