What does /lit/ think about Chris McCandless? Was he a hero who took action doing things his favorite authors could only dream and write about, or was he an idealistic kid led astray by his romanticism and killed by his own naivety? Would his hero Tolstoy have respected him if they met? Was his final conclusion that happiness is only real when shared correct?
I've read Into The Wild. The author had to make half the shit up just to make McCandless not look like a total loser.
Idiot child. Should have just been a male model and eventually coked himself to death instead
Like Grizzly Man, he's a loser lauded by bored suburbanites who wish desperately that their lives had a modicum of challenge and danger.

he had fucked up family that left him feeling empty; and he sought to fill that void of meaning in the outdoors. but he was not prepared for what he was doing and it ended up killing him. i think he deserves pity but was not a hero per se.

What did he make up?

He was a dumb hipster before hipsters were a thing, but now he's worshiped by hipsters.
Tolstoy would have liked him for his idealism.
