I'm an Irish student, so I'm not deeply familiar with how difficult it would be to do that well.

Have you been to St Andrews? It's a village.
Also it's full of posh English cunts and Americans. So's everywhere else in Scotland but it's especially bad there. And Edinburgh's better for lots of subjects anyway.
>>
>>9379926
I've got a source from 2015 here that says that only 9.21% of students get A*AA or above. It is fairly hard to get an A*. The vast majority (95% or more I think) of Oxbridge offer holders make or exceed those grades though.

Are you serious? I'm not sure how it works in your country, but in the UK banks and finance companies literally hire on how likeable you are, your ability to critically think, your verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills (Even Goldman Sachs do a test that has no Maths in it), and the prestige of your university. There's a reason The City and Canary Wharf is full of History and Law graduates, as well as Economists.

You just get trained on the job - graduate schemes involve 2 years of training which any clever individual can do.

http://news.efinancialcareers.com/uk-en/243963/getting-a-job-at-goldman-sachs/

>Those excellent students with a first in economics and ten internships? They’re not the ideal. When I was at Goldman, we were actually fairly anti-hiring these people, whom we referred to as “plug and play.” Yes, they’ve got the track record, but they’re not exciting.
>What Goldman Sachs really wants are people with unusual profiles. This is where the emphasis lies – it’s all about trying to attract a diverse group of applicants who’ve studied history, or English Literature instead of just finance.
>This is why Goldman Sachs has some big diversity initiatives. It’s also why Goldman – pretty much uniquely among banks – doesn’t do numerical tests. Nor does it do assessment centres. Instead, the recruitment process at Goldman is all about round after round of face-to-face interviews – there’s a big emphasis on character and being the sort of interesting person they want to work with.
>So, what did we look for in the cover letter? We looked for creativity and effort and writing about GS. There were some crazy submissions – poems and things. Someone who’d studied English Literature at Cambridge wrote a really brilliant and off the wall description of why they wanted to work for us and we invited them for interview because we thought they might have some brilliant and innovative ideas.

http://www.cityam.com/213259/how-get-finance-sector-six-university-degree-subjects-most-likely-land-you-job-london-bank

>In fact, according to the research of 706 bankers, 15 per cent of HSBC's staff did their degrees in arts and humanities subjects - although it added that most of them went to either Oxford or Cambridge.
That source also shows that the Fifth highest paid City bankers have History degrees.

https://www.ft.com/content/3016bd84-e981-11e2-9f11-00144feabdc0

>Students of history, philosophy and English may be weary of being told they frittered away their university years on a useless degree. But they can finally answer back after new research found that about 20 per cent of humanities graduates were working in growth-driving sectors such as finance and management at the peak of the UK’s economic boom.
>Prominent humanities graduates in the City include Charlotte Hogg (history), appointed last month as chief operations officer of the Bank of England, Sir Philip Hampton (English), chairman of Royal Bank of Scotland and Paul Manduca (modern languages), chairman of Prudential.
>>
>>9385292

>>9385327

>>
>>9385330

>>

History, Politics, English Language and Lit

My school sends ~15-20 people per year to Oxbridge. Every year, without exception, it's the kids who aren't really that clever but who try very, very hard who get the places. There's a reason even UCL is outperforming Oxford now.

Which uni has a particularly strong PolSci faculty? I'm thinking of going to the UK for my Masters, but am still deciding on the institution.

I'm from NUS, which is honestly a pretty meh uni in Singapore.

What universities have you narrowed it down to?
>>
>>9387078
What are your back-up unis?

The ones in London seem pretty good, I was going to apply to the LSE, ICL or UCL but my grades in my second to last year of school were too poor, and it was pretty expensive for a foreign student.
>>
>>9387089
LSE, Oxford, Cambridge. You know, the usual. I'm open to suggestions if there are any others beyond this group.

My backups were UCL, Durham and Edinburgh. Oxford has my lowest grade entry requirements bar Edinburgh though

Currently doing A Levels bros, any tips for getting into Cambridge? I want to get into the Natural Sciences course, to do biology. Do I have a good chance of getting in with 4 A*'s and 1 A (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Further Maths)? What do they ask at the interview? I've read a few biology-related books that I could talk for hours about, how much do they care about your extracurricular reading?
>>
>>9377931
>tfw no new season of nathan for you
>>
>>9387400

Cambridge mostly care about grades. The interview is just to make sure you're moderately competent and didn't somehow luck your way through the exams.

Extra-curriculars are more important. Prove some kind of engagement in things outside of school that aren't totally insignificant and that'll stand you in good stead.

I had a few friends get in for science. Step 1) do all the extra curricular reading you can, start teaching yourself a few niche areas to talk about on your personal statement
Step 2) don't be boring. Browsing lit should give you a head start on this. I know lots of people who are science nerds but know fuck all about anything else

You can even do some study for your A-Levels during the Summer.

What do universities want to hear in an interview or on your PS
>>
>>9387784
P.S: books that you've read and stuff that you've taught yourself
Interview: have you really read them, and can you apply the ideas elsewhere
>>
>>9387784
My personal statement was very little about my extracurricular stuff and more about what Oxbridge call 'supercurricular' stuff. You need to show that you've gone to the nth degree to show passion for your subject. For me that was doing a year long seminar course on the Englightenmet with the college I was applying for and also reading a fucking load. I'm particularly interested in Russian literature so I wrote about Karamazov and Dead Souls, at interview I was asked about Dead Souls and why I liked it and also about my thoughts on Dosto's approach to God and religion. I also researched the college and realised that the resident literature professor was an expert in medieval literature, so I pursued that path and read Canterbury Tales and Gawain and the Green Knight. I wrote an essay on Gawain for a competition and mentioned that in my PS, which was brought up a lot at interview. Overall they don't care about whether you're good at swimming or like jazz music, they just care about whether you are passionate about your subject. Any personality you have they will discover at interview.

Reading the thread made me realize that anglo schooling seems a lot different from mine
How does it go?
Here in Finland it starts with compulsory education:
7-12 yrs old = Lower school (Ala-aste)
12-15 yrs old = Upper school (Yläaste)
After is not compulsory but practically everyone goes to either High school or Vocational school (Lukio tai ammattikoulu) for 3-4 years
Continues with University:
Under: Kandidaatti (3 years) (Bachelor?)
Upper: Maisteri (2 years) (Masters)
after that you can continue to be either or both
Lisensiaatti (?)
Tohtori (Doctor)
>>
>>9388777
5-11 = Primary school
12-16 = Secondary school
17-18 = Sixth form / college / apprenticeship (now compulsory but wasn't a few years ago)
Then university

As a foreign student at Oxford I can tell you that it is really difficult.

You need:
-proof of funding (which is really difficult as fees are extremely high for non-Europeans)
-a GPA of at least 3.7-3.8 from a top 100/150 University
-proof of proficiency of English (I took the TOEFL IBT test)
-excel during an intrusive and harsh interview questioning your motivation, skills and intellect
-write a pretty fucking good application with at least 3 academic and/or professional references from credible individuals

good luck

ok, if you can read and digest works fast, and in depth, then try reading everything twice before uni (on the syllabus) and do some marking on the pages etc (also try do at least one other book from the author) and then, when you get there, journals and articles will be your best friend. I read them all the time to and from uni when heading to central london etc and try get into reading one when you wake and one when you sleep too.
TL;DR read lots, you'll be fine

this guy's comment is v important, try doing two/three drafts and ask the lecturer to perhaps give you some brief feedback on each one

I go out 1/2 times a week and still am getting a low 1st - i imagine i'll have to start trying harder in 2nd year but i feel that alot of my own knowledge from my school (was private and had a personal tutor to push me into advanced leearning froma young age) - from people i/m living with, we try spend 2/3 hours a night revising what you have done and learning the next lesson and just learning about future lessons in general, helps expand your knowledge on the subject if you do research into it. Also, podcasts are great and have really helped me, even if it is something to tune out, i still remember 40/50% of what was said - recently got bored of english podcasts and have started learning spanish alongside my degree and everything is going well so far

TL;DR research for 2/3 hours should get you a 1st, break times listen to a podcast about subject, just keep learning

After reading this thread i feel like i've finally understood something.
I have never seen this sort of love and dedication towards something from a group of people as smart as you guys.
The feeling of failur grips me for the first time. I think i could be one of you. But i chose to do nothing, nothing for the past years, now going to have a bad grade from a bad university. There is nothing more to it. I did let life run past me, and all the warning signs were there.
Though what would you do if you never would have had that sort of relation to the subjects you thrive for?
Am i unlucky, or just not worthy. I think that is the missing part, why i just don't feel like im really there, i just can't see the importance.
Thank you guys. Without you i would have probably never been this true to myself.
