proving my point
real talk man, all those books are scams, or at the very least something to give soccer-moms
reading & writing is the only way to advance the fictional world within your head
if you're more of a traditionalist, think of creative exercises, such as read a book, then take the characters as you know them and put them in a new scenario and write a short story out of this conflict
the posters here, the few that actually have any aspiration to make it as a novelist, are complete bitter fucks who enjoy the fantsy of being rather than doing, don't come here for advice on this topic
good luck bro

just wanted to add: one of the best fields to study is psychology/philosophy if you want to improve your writing. You should already have your head wrapped around writing, as well as plenty of novels read, so you can actually apply what you begin to learn form these subjects
learn & think how people develop and change overtime, be able to visualize the pillars of personality... this will naturally give you characters greater depth, and overtime you'll stop relying on your own experiences, knowledge and relationships and begin to really create organic situations from real-fake people
jordan peterson's lectures are a great entry to this:
