How do I increase my vocabulary? Do I just look up words I don't know as I run across them while reading? What did you do to get a "more bigger" knowledge of word meanings?

My dad was fucking crazy when I was young and made me read the dictionary. A page a day for years. 6 years. Grade 3-9.

Did you retain anything?

Read more books. As you read you'll find words you don't know and look them up. Some of them you'll remember instantly others will take several times of looking up before you know them.

Another reason the US deserves to get nuked.
I read a thesaurus cover to cover, which took a month, daily. I'm now reading a dictionary of a few thousand pages, which I'll read cover to cover, marking off the useful words. It's worthwhile, building a decent vocabulary. I read them because I know all the words but can't remember them when casually speaking; I try to dive into a dictionary to improve my everyday speech.

I've started reading H.P. Lovecraft and feel downright retarded because I can't make it through a few paragraphs without running into at least one word I don't know. Sadly, I always become too invested in the story to bother stopping to look up unfamiliar words...

You gotta look them up if you're running into them that often, brainlet
thankfully Lovecraft is so purple it doesn't even matter if you understand
