Why do I read every Shakespeare play as a comedy? I didn't get dark undertone at all until I read other people's opinions on it and then it made so much sense. Probably because I read Twelfth Night first, right?

You're not describing twin peaks that well. All I got from it was project that outstayed it's running time because of it's popularity and completely lost it's plot subsequently. If you want something similair, think serial novel's. Bad Dickens for instance.
