Did any reading this used to browse or enjoy /lit/ or /his/ but after pursuing or attaining an academic degree find it repulsive? This is currently the case for me.

The content, knowledge and generally the tone is incredibly uneducated and juvenile, I'd bet good money most users philosophical knowledge comes from a handful at most existential books and some wikipedia articles, the same holding relatively true for other disciplines.

The format of 4chan seems wholly unconductive to generating any worthwhile academic discussion.

I'm just about to graduate with a degree in Linguistics. I hide and don't even bother to look at linguistics threads because I know I'll get intellectually triggered by them.
>>
>>9350203

I look at the other way. Discussions of philosophy in a university setting are juvenile, simplistic and overly dogmatic. It's basically 4chan level discourse IRL. The only difference is that here you're not paying five figures to have it.

College is for the slaves
>>
>>9350203
This isn't necessarily for intelligent discussion and not every one is going to have a good option compressor to your own. I feel the same as you. But we're here for memes and jokes about intelligent discussion. Soemthing most normies and dumb normies wouldn't understand. We're here for fun. That's kinda the point of life and exist in my opinion. Is to enjoy it and take pleasure. Don't be too hedonistic though. Always work hard to improve.

I liked it more after I got my degree because I could start helping people out with concrete recommendations, from the perspective of a student who still remembers how hard it is to learn shit.

A lot of people here are really earnest to learn shit in a way that just doesn't exist elsewhere, especially at college itself. Everyone's a preening cunt at university. As soon as they get some ground to stand on, they start jerking off on it. People here seem to have the tacit assumption that unless you have read Kant inside and out, while standing on your head, you shouldn't even presume to comment on Hegel. It may have its downsides but it produces a lot of intellectual honesty.
>>
>>9350213
didn't actually like /his/, always shit, just included it as its relevant to my specialisation
>>9350211
yikes
>>
>>9350220
wtf i love /jp/ now his still a shit
>>
>>9350223
From what I see here people assume to comment on any and every philosopher with a glaring lack of knowledge and are then similarly "refuted" by one of the same kind.

Perhaps I don't browse enough threads?
>>
Holup so you don't like how nearly everybody here loves Plato and hates the rest?

just avoid the threads where you know something about the subject. That's what I do and it usually works out okay. But also, are you seriously coming to 4chan to have academic discussions? Are you up to date on current events? 4chan has been raided... there's a spectre haunting 4chan
>>
>>9350262
my tastes in shitposts and funposts is that they reflect some degree of knowledge too, sadly.

If you are just realizing this you aren't as smart as you think.
>>
>>9350203
4chan has always been full of bullshit, that's almost the point

the good part is that you're free to call out the bullshit and then call the poster an uneducated faggot

see >>9350223
it's time for you to start jerking off all over /lit/

if you don't find satisfaction in that then leave before you waste more time on this godforsaken site
>>
>>9350203
Are you kidding? I started coming to /lit/ after starting my masters because I get a higher standard of academic or intellectual discussion here than I ever did at uni. I don't for a moment think of it as a substitute, but I find that the anonymity of 4chan goes some way towards stripping away the ego element of academic discussion and can actually help it. Talking to other students I generally find that most of them don't want to talk about their subject, or if they do, they have an understanding of it not much better than /lit/ memes. Of course you can have some really stimulating discussion with actual academics, postdocs, PhD students (sometimes - only sometimes) etc., but in general I've found this aspect really disappointing at postgrad level. And before you say it's because I go to a shit uni, I did my undergrad at an excellent uni and it wasn't so much different there - you could find intellectual conversation if you really went looking for it but most people didn't really seem to want to talk about "class stuff" outside of class.

Basically I agree (at least partly) with these guys:

>>

Could you give me just two examples of high-level discussions you've had here in the past year?
>>
>>9350203
>The format of 4chan seems wholly unconductive to generating any worthwhile academic discussion
oh wow look @ mister college fucken educated boi here with his grand discoveries about medium specificity. who else could have possibly recognized that a website whose threads only exist for a few hours and then disappear into oblivion is not a place conducive to complex and well thought out discussions?

dude fucking get over yourself. as others here have said 4chan is for fun and banter and if you come here expecting serious discussion youre using the site entirely wrong. do you think anyone here actually thinks 'oh boy cant wait to boot up 4chan today to discuss synthetic a priori propositions'?

a lot of us here are pretty knowledgeable in philosophy and given the right thread people can be surprisingly insightful (girardfag being the prime example). but if im going to be at all serious about philosophy ill read a fucking book. the reason i come on this site is because there is literally nowhere else that i can be called a faggot for my interpretation of heidegger and the absurd collision of high and low culture will always entertain me.

ever have someone in your philosophy class who wont stop sucking a philosopher's dick and generally being an obnoxious blowhard? well 4chan is where you come to talk shit about those people because youll be ostracized if you do it in real life. /lit/ doesnt contain much philosophical value for its careful analysis or understanding of philosophers. its a place for hobbyists to hang out. and the fact that there are memes of philosophers pleases me more than knowing that there is another sterile board to discuss philo in an orderly manner.
>>
>>9350288
as you say though "you could find intellectual conversation if you really went looking for it".
"Of course you can have some really stimulating discussion with actual academics, postdocs, PhD students (sometimes - only sometimes) etc"

Of course most other students aren't going to have much to say, a lot of them just want to do the bare minimum, or have no real thoughts on the subject other than what they are taught or expected.

I'm interested to hear where you found the most disappointment in intellectual discussion? I certainly agree with you that most other students, discussion in labs and tutorials is often reprehensible, although quickly shot down by the professor/teacher.

Personally the most interesting discussions I find with tutors and professors, or other students who would then do well and I would continue to see as we progressed down similar academic paths. Is it likewise for you?

>suddenly realize not a single thread's level of discourse ever rises above "vaguely familiar with the topic at hand"
>suddenly realize this entire board is just catharsis for undergraduates who can't be too pretentious at university because they'll get slapped down by more knowledgeable people so they have to do it here
>suddenly realize this is an entire board filled with dabblers who are sorta earnestly interested in talking about stuff like literary postmodernism, but too lazy to put the time in and actually go read about it

why do all our postgrad students suffer from the kind of dumb that stops them from samefagging their subject into precision these days? half this board only knows shit about heidegger because the people dumb enough to go post grad in heidegger at least knew to shill it to the point of creating pornpasta. i miss heidegger porn.

Yes

I'm a classical studies major and I like to help people who want to learn. Of course there isn't often an academic level discourse here, but you find it here and there and discussions are interesting.
I think you held /lit/ to a high esteem as you came here to feel good about yourself ; now that you're in academia you found a better channel for your petty sentiments.

I'm still in fucking high school and I've realized this already. 4chan is a highly isolated place that develops its own ideas, which are neat to explore for a year or two. It's good to step out of the mainstream comfort zone, but, yeah, of course, staying on the 4chan level long term is pretty sad if you are serious about a subject.
