Nobody idolizes him here and this is a shitpost but he's definitely a poet. We can argue about what poetry is because there isn't really a definitive definition, but the general consensus was that it used to mean meter and rhyme schemes, and now has taken a much more "gray" definition. I'd define poetry as (and this is a GENERAL rule, there are still exceptions) text that uses line breaks and white space to some effect.

You could argue that Bukowski is a sort of "fuck poetry, I'll show you poetry" kind of poet, a "rock the boat" kind of guy, and that might be part of it, but he still uses line breaks to an effect. They are a sort of punctuation with very emphatic value. Not as strong as periods, or commas, but still punctuation that causes pauses.

Have you ever even browsed this board before? We hate Bukowski. We used to have a tripfag whose entire gimmick was aggressively criticizing Bukowski whenever his name was mentioned. And yeah, Bukowski was a mediocre-at-best poet with absolutely no understanding of metre or technique, a rank amateur who mostly got by on his personality, but at least he made the occasional attempt to craft a beautiful image or original thought. He usually failed but it was still sincere failure and sometimes even demonstrated effort and creativity. It wasn't the sloppy, cliched and self-satisfied poetry of Rupi Kaur, which is written to service her favorite MSNBC-approved political talking points and her own self-image as an "artiste." It wasn't just a great big act of self-promotion and propaganda with no absolutely intelligent thought whatsoever given to craft or beauty.

I guess that depends on who you ask, but I personally think that traditional techniques in prosody like metre can give poetry a lot more structural depth and subtlety than blank verse. I wouldn't say it's necessary for a good poem, but breaking with tradition is way more meaningful to me when the poet has a demonstrated understanding of the traditions he's forgoing before he abstains. Look at Yeats's technique in his earlier poems and tell me that the sheer intricacy of his quiet alterations to traditional forms is anything short of incredible. That level of profundity and skill is too often absent from modern blank verse IMO
