Hey /lit/,
Who here is in grad school or looking to apply? Let's share our interests, our strategies, our coping mechanisms.
MA student thinking about applying to NYU for a PhD in 18C Lit.
>NYU for a PhD in 18C Lit.
This sounds like a huge mistake, but I can't quite say how.
Poli sci MA, finishing my coursework today (last seminar), looking to apply to UofT and McGill for social and experimental psychology.
I wouldn't recommend graduate training for >95% of the university grads I know. Especially for something like 18C lit. You'd have to be an exceptional case with an exceptional talent and interest in the field.
MFA. currently volunteering, teaching poetry to kids. considering PhD in 20c poetry or comp. won't be for a few years tho.

Why is that?

Don't get me wrong I'm enjoying the process but it's a bit of a ponzi scheme for many. I used to think law was the same but it's far worse in academia-- just not enough hirable positions or tenure track jobs for the amount of PhDs being awarded. And private sector jobs, if you're fortunate enough to be marketable to them, would probably take a socialable BA before an overqualified doctoral grad. But not a good economic decision for most PhD applicants, when you're 30 years old and un-marketable and your friends of equal capability are starting families and have six figure incomes.
A fully funded MA or MFA if it's a one-year deal, though, I'd encourage.

I'm doing a fully funded terminal MA right now and this is what they're inculcating us with. They spent the first semester putting the fear of God into everyone about the ass job market.

yeah, thats basically why I did an MFA and am spending a few years racking up as much teaching experience as I can.

Same with mine. I'd say if you're the definitive best, or second best, within your class' cohort then carry on with the PhD but make an informed decision and not just think in terms of path dependency (BA-->MA-->PhD-->Cushy tenure job).
