Why is it deemed necessary to read Dante?
Dante you know? He'sa Italiano! Mama mia!
eh, don't
You have to be literate.

It's three part Romans, Florence politics and Catholicism.
Dante didn't understand Greek so he got all he needed from Latin poets. Bible is obvious, while you needn't bother with Florence politics past the Ghibellini - Guelphs feud that involved Dante. There's plenty of references there that are too obscure to anyone to guess.
>>9338673
Read Petrarch and Boccaccio instead
>>9338673
Bible, Vergil, Aristotle.

If you can understand Italian, read Dante for the prose.
Don't read Dante for the content. Nigga barely understood the Bible and wrote a self-insert fanfic, forcing his misunderstanding into the popular consciousness.
You really don't need to be well versed in anything else, just have a moderate degree of literacy. And be willing to take notes and Google words you don't know. The hardest part is starting, and slogging through the prose. But it becomes an addictive read very quickly.
It's fun and full of character.

I don't think your assessment of the content is reflective of a comprehensive reading.
>>9339257
Kek I don't think you read it very closely
>>9339281
You'd think there'd be a higher level of reading comprehension for this board
He btfos atheists
Seriously how can you read his play and become a believer?

because he's the father of italian literature and one of the most important authors in europe
besides that, his poetry is absolutely stunning
It's not. Who cares about medieval poetry anyway? Just read the greeks, faggot.
Marries the biblical and Greek literary canons
"Dante is the only poet." - Beckett
"The Comedy is the best book we have." - Borges
Considered, by Joyce, second only to Shakespeare.

He's right

I can't tell if this is irony anymore.
Because he has the best conceptualization of hell, heaven and purgatory. All with exquisite prose.
>>9340104
indeed it is very beautiful prose

Prose is the voice of the novel; it's literally how the novel sounds as it is being read.
>>9341411
In fact I asked because Dante didn't write a novel.
>>9339257
>forcing his misunderstanding into the popular consciousness
Barely, and he didn't do anything near the damage Milton did for Biblical misconceptions
>>9341428
Prose is the voice of the comedy; it's literally how the comedy sounds as it is being read.
>>9341544
Okay but it's poetry, so I wouldn't talk about prose
>>9338673
Y'see, if Shakespeare created consciousness Dante created the rest.
Influence
Because his work is beautiful

>>9340011
No, I feel that way too
>>9341440
Milton is badass though.
You won't get biblical misconceptions if you just read the Bible.
>>9343173
Shakespeare is absolutely GOAT, but he dispersed all his greatness in 38 works, while Dante condensed it in one poem. That's why Dante he's even more GOAT

Come shit talk Milton to my face you little bitch-boy. Milton is an OG, one of the proudest sons of England.
