Poetry is an exploration of beauty. Anything you can say in a poem could be said more clearly and concisely in one or two sentences of prose--three at most. But it can't be said as beautifully. In poetry expression of ideas approaches the sublime, approaches the unspeakable beauty, because poetry itself, the higher it goes and the more harmonious it becomes, gradually ceases to be a "speaking," insofar as a speaking is the use of words to communicate ideas. The greatest of poems are great because of their sounds, because of their rhyme and rhythm. They cease to be speaking and become explorations of beauty and harmony in the spoken and written word. Poems have more in common with music than they do with prose.
