Just finished this too.

Harrogate's antics are obviously well known, but still wonderful to read. Plus the 'Moonlight Melon Mounter' is one of the best sobriquet I've ever heard.

I particularly liked the chapter where Sut went mussel fishing and the girl he had been having sex with was killed in the rock fall. The description of the lightning-lit scene as a "baroque pieta" was terrific.

The flaming train in the snowy mountains was obviously beautiful too.

I really liked this book, even more so than Blood Meridian.
