But what's the method/process? Open a pdf and do it word for word? Try to Do it from memory? Painting requires exploring different techniques and constructions to realize the master's result. Writing I just push a few keys and it's indistinguishable from the original. Seems too easy to do without absorbing anything.

Don't copy their text, copy the technique. Learn to read into a work and see how it is constructed. Learn critical reading skills (this is a real thing and worth understanding given your profession) and take apart a work piece by piece until you understand the way it was constructed, then construct something else in a similar manner.

As you grow more comfortable with the process, it gets faster and faster until you're doing it automatically.

Not OP but thanks for making this post. My writing is atrocious and whilst I know the best way to improve is by doing everything you said, actually hearing it from someone kinda makes it real if that makes sense. Defo gonna try to make a habit out of it.

I'm lucky, I can do this at a basic level naturally. I'm just a lazy fuck and don't really try (also depression and zero self-esteem and other bad mental issues). If you want it, go get it. It just takes practice and a dedication and a willingness to figure it out.

Anyone can learn to write well, the only difference between us is how much effort it takes to learn. Be dedicated, take apart those forms of writing you admire, learn from them, and get it done. You'll be cranking out good works sooner than later.

Who said it was? You need to learn how to look at and deconstruct a sentence or paragraph and see the intent behind the words. It's hard and an artform, not a science.

A good place to learn the skill is actually philosophy, since there is ALWAYS a background meaning to the words. Poetry is about the worst place ever to learn how to do this. Find a philosopher you know already and take about a few passages, learn their thinking and how they write. You'll get it.
