Confucianism is a secular religion where 1 man's teachings are followed. No one says anything bad about Confucianism.

But when Korean people follow the teachings of Kim Il Sung, they pejoratively mock their political belief, and think it strange. It comes from a bias against socialism. If Confucius was a socialist/communist, they'd be saying he was a cult leader or dictator as well.

This book is one American guy, with no ties to Korea, trying to decipher metaphors and squeeze in innuendos into cultural media North Koreans consume. Meaning that there are Korean citizens who see the 'correctness' of Juche but aren't Koreans/weren't born in the DPRK. Juche is a misguided, poorly implemented, false ideal. You can't tout self-reliance as a national principle and also accept food aid from your sworn enemy. You also can't claim self-reliance and still depend on your Chinese neighbors to help keep you afloat. Someone who is "foreign" is not the same as "someone from a different race." North Koreans are racially the same as South Koreans, but nonetheless, South Koreans would still be treated as foreigners and would be placed in this foreigner's only section.

Juche has to be understood in the context of the post Korean War and the Sino-Soviet Split. The country wanted to step back from Cold War era politics and give the world a distinct way of understanding socialism and communism, apart from the ideological monopoly the Soviets and the Chinese had created.
