>So much for Communism, Atheism, and Free Love.

I tried to justify it to myself by saying that the money and material possessions don't really matter, it's the experience you can get with it that matters. So it's worth a small fortune for something so great, because who cares about money? (I'm not going to Reed btw, but a similar LAC).

But yeah this logic only works if you have money to spend. It's still pretty ironic desu. Good luck anon.

I'm trying to justify it to myself like that, but for that amount of money I could buy an apartment in Mendoza and have enough money left over to spend the next ten years reading, writing, eating morcilla, and drinking sweet red wine.

I guess with Reed I could go there and then Yale or Harvard, and essentially indebt my way into the upper class, but the cost of it is literally insane. A degree from most universities would cost what they're offering me in "financial aid" for one year, and I'll still end up 100k+ in debt if I go there.

It's kind of ironic because the only person I know who goes there is a faggot SJW who constantly talks about socialism and leftism and projects "white privilege" onto people while saying dumb shit like "individualism is a form of white supremacy". I don't understand how it's even possible for these places to espouse leftist values or communism while charging more money for a degree than many people will ever see in their lifetimes.

It's funny how prépas actually close people's minds and make them less mature than when they leave high school. I sacrificed, what little social life a taupin (guy in a maths/physics prépa) has, my ranking in my promotion, and some sleep to keep reading a bit of real /lit/erature throughout those 2 horrible years, it helped me stay sane, I believe.

I literally can't express how much better my life has been since I attended Oxford. I went to a state school and gradually became the stereotypical moody, withdrawn sensitive type who both despises the quality of his immediate culture and feels a weird pride for having been raised in a sort of anti-intellectual and brutal environment. I was all set to take my Russell Group humanities BA and spend my life working as an anonymous, insecure wageslave forever thankful of being offered a job and forever too insecure to pursue my creative ambitions. The chip on my shoulder had become something of a wedge, and I felt too out of place regardless of my environment, too resentful and bitter to even attempt to make it in the artistic world. Then I finally applied for Oxford and got in to study an English MA, with reassurance that should I work hard enough a career in academia or within one of Oxford's affiliated companies would be almost guaranteed. I turned up as apprehensive as usual, and the first few days were spent regretting my decision and desperately feigning a cultured personality. But then I realized that the people there were just interesting and that the snobbery and exclusivity I had anticipated was just a myth borne out of my working class upbringing. I've since graduated, having spend the year dining in grand halls with groups of interesting people, dating several girls (one of whom, a petite Russian whose family traces back to the aristocracy, is now my fiancee). I work four days a week at a publishing company and earn £38k a year. I regularly meet up with friends from my college and visit Oxford for nights out and for meetings with my professors. The Martin Eden-esque novel I have been writing for two years has been selected for publication at a major British publishing house and, honestly, I could not have imagined a few years ago how great life could be. I come on /lit/ and see how pathetic you all are and just shake my head and chuckle. If I saw you guys on the street I would of course throw you a penny or discuss Bukowski or whatever "realist" writers you enjoy, but ultimately I would be able to tell within ten seconds if you're an Oxbridge grad and would dismiss you as a potential source of good company if you are not. I never thought I'd know what it was like to be objectively better than somebody else, for the value of my existence to be superior to the value of a stranger's, but now I do and I've never been happier. People are awed by power and prestige. All I need to do is mention the university I attended (if only for a year) and they immediately begin to hunch and look at their feet because they know they are in the presence of greatness.

>>
>>9299541
you want to do it for yourself?

starting point is always classical mechanics - but it requires some/a lot(depending on your background) maths. best way, i imagine, is finding a course on yt that follows some modern textbook which you can torrent, then read a chapter, watch the lecture, read the chapter again, do all the exercises at the end, and if you can do them easily you have the same knowledge as a student from that yt course. but t b h you need god tier determination to stick with it like that

Not sure how it is there, but I've just gone stealthmode so far. I'm not right wing, just not very left. I mostly just nod and encourage other people to talk when discussions like that arise.
You will probably find a group of friends who are pretty chill, though, and you can relax around them. Don't worry about it too much - if worst comes to worst and you get a reputation you can always have fun BTFOing pseuds daily without worrying about what they think of you.
>>

I'm in facultad de ciencias (uruguay public university) studying maths, it's exactly what you expect full of pseuds, kinda easy and cozy with nice people.
I mean there are people who have good level but where too lazy to leave the country, so it isn't completely mediocre but the classes have a low level, i'm doing two careers at the same time (philosophy) and it's still kinda easy.
Maybe you can finish the career in 5 or 6 semesters and get some recognition on other universities, as you can register to all subjects as soon as you enter and with some self-education you can easily finish in half the time normal people finish

I took a creative nonfiction course with him at Ponoma back in '94. We weren't allowed to show anyone our essays outside of the class for some reason. He seemed naturally intelligent, didnt need to look at any notes or textbooks or prepare for any lectures, he just knew his stuff and was super casual.

I saw him talking to a girl on campus one day. He uncharacteristically wore a Fila sweatsuit, the kind that looks like it's made from the same material as parachutes, and trainer sneakers with a matching bandana. That was his pussy hunt outfit apparently. Several times a week, same outfit, I'd see him hitting on women in it. I once saw him wearing it while carrying an identical outfit from the dry cleaners, he had like 4 sets of same Fila sweatsuit.

I asked him about it in class and he said we aren't allowed to discuss anything unrelated to class while inside class, the same way we can't show anyone outside of class our essays. A student called out "but Dostoevsky isn't in this class and last week you talked about replicating his black tea obsession to test its affects on your own writing". Wallace stared blankly at the student with dead eyes for 30 seconds in dead silence then said "you just got knocked down a full letter grade. Any other smart asses? Didn't think so." and pushed up his glasses with his index finger.

I remember telling myself this guy will either be super successful or kill himself.

They were falling out of various ubers on a lawn and looking around confused in matching white emory tshirts, I walked up and asked what they were doing. They wanted to find parties so being drunk I just told them to follow me and mother ducked them down the sidewalk until we found some while making fun of private schools.
And yeah if you did know me you'd have no idea I go near this place, only a turbo-autist would make that obvious.

For lack of a better thread and not wanting to make one myself, I'll ask this here:
I'm conflicted between taking a course on epistemology and ethics. They're taught by different professors, there are only two of them here. Both might be offered again next year, but also might not.
I'm taking an aesthetics course in the same term as one of these, followed by a philosophy of science course the following term.
The professor teaching the epistemology course is known to focus on writing, whereas the other is a bit of a stray cannon.
I know from some friends that he has one course where he expects every student to talk about their belief system for half a class.
Make this decision for me.

>>
>>9301092
Going there next year. How is it anon? Give me a rundown
>>
>>9302541
During the month I arrived here, there was a rash of apartment robberies where the same guys would just go around the neighborhood breaking into any first floor apartment with an open window. They'd often hold the occupants for robbery at gunpoint for hours. Multiple armed robberies take place every day or every few days (I think they've increased patrols). I narrowly escaped a mugging by four black guys who swarmed me, just after dusk, in a populous area in the heart of the "safe" zone, because I ran for help and got lucky. A student was shot to death in the neighborhood 2007. Full-blown car jackings are once a week. SUVs rove around robbing multiple people in an hour in broad daylight.
>>
>>9302558

Sounds like Chicago needs their version of Giuliani. Send out the death squads to rid the streets of scum.
>>
>>9302564
You can't even imagine. It's basically New York from The Warriors at this point. The area I'm describing, where the university is, has practically the largest police presence in the fucking United States, it's in the top 10-20% of neighborhoods in Chicago, and it's still as bad as I'm describing.

You can't even fathom how bad the actual ghetto is, right next door on all sides. It's a total no-go zone. Like, literally.

Hyde Park is "safe" in that you will likely be pretty safe if you maintain a bunker mentality while you're here. At worst, you'll get mugged at some point. But it's a shitty way to live. It's like that part in Heart of Darkness where they're on the boat, "safe," but they can hear the chanting around them on all sides coming from the jungle.
>>
>>9299969
me too anon, hoping to transfer to UC Berkeley or Davis this year
>>
>>9299969

Pretty nice really.

Work for two years, go to school for two years. Get an associates which will look good for transfer (set a goal, complete it bullshit), easy to keep a high GPA, transfer to basically any Uni that you want, experience that for two years, possible have nearly a full-ride due to scholarships, slightly more mature than your peers, graduate with a a bachelor's from your school of choice, and then have great prospects for moving onto a Master's program.

Are you planning to leave the country? I guess Americans can get whatever office job with a humanities degree as long as they went to college, but the perspective is dire if you decide to pursue your actual intereses in the paisito, unless you're simply set for life thanks to family money. Anyways, I'm asking because engineering is legit sucking my soul and a meager living after studying Letras doesn't look so bad, but your insight on the matter would be valuable.

It's not that I "disdain" Chads, nor do I fear them. I dealt with a great number of them before I dropped out but I can't have enjoyable or meaningful intercourse with an inauthentic person. A person could conceivably be a sincere, genuine Chad, but I've never met one. They were all acting on pretense, as though obliged to behave in accord with the alleged properties of an archetypal "alpha."

Though it's gratifying to know I'm not the only one who vaguely senses an impending doom on that campus. Must be something in the coffee.

White that was born and raised in Hyde Park here. It's gotten so much better over the years, you can't even picture what it was like before you were there.

Honestly, I kind of feel like a Saffer sometimes. I have instincts with regards to places never to go and shit like that. When I was younger and my parents were naive, we would sometimes park the car outside. That was fine in the winter, but in the summer our car would get broken into at least once a week for the parking ticket on the windshield so people could park next to the beach. A single human leg was found on the park right outside my house last spring. There was a gang-style execution in broad daylight in my childhood park (different park) last month while my dad was walking by.

Everyone I know from home gets outraged when Trump says he wants to send in the feds but I unironically want there to be a violent blood purge of everyone on the south side besides my neighborhood and Mount Greenwood

I was mugged twice, which isn't bad at all desu, especially since only one time was with a gun.

But I honestly get fucking scared when I'm outside and it gets dark out, even though I live in a normal college town now

I don't know if I'm the best judge of FU as I've had my own problems being social with others and trying to stay on top of work and reading. I'm also an undecided major so I can't tell you anything about the acclaimed business or nursing school. I can say the gym is nice and the library has just one big floor with a ton of books which is great. If you know SW CT prep kids, FU is pretty much like that, or can be nice but also can be on the spectrum of stuck up, and, a bit soulles as the anon noted here: (https://warosu.org/lit/thread/S9225768). The core classes have not been anything too special for me, nor the teachers. I think this is all to be expected for first year stuff, and it probably won't be much different from high school classes, but it may be different for you and if you have a major. Freshmen at least stay on campus and drink in each other's rooms on weekends and I've never been thrilled by the other options on the weekends offered by the school. I think college is one of the times where it really can be what you make it because of all the opportunities offered here and the ability to just be whatever you want, you just need to actually do it. If you want explanations and such my email is [email protected]
