The other way I like to explain it is looking at how time is treated.

In the ancient/classical world, everything is eternal, nothing will ever truly change (except possible eschatons in which everything is eternal in Heaven or your favorite metaphysical realm).

In modernism, history is a forward march towards utopia. It is like climbing a mountain, in which humanity's fundamental goodness and technological advance will remove all suffering and pain.

Post-modernism is the realization that while things can change, their is no guarantee that this is a good thing. We are not hiking up a mountain, we are wandering aimlessly in the mist. At worst, we are marching into the abyss of a doomsday scenario of your choice (extinction, atomic holocaust, global warming, etc)
